I'm doing two track days at Dijon & Magny Cours in a couple of weeks time. Having been a little dissapointed with the feel of the standard brakes, I thought I'd have them upgraded. I'm having stainless Goodridge hoses fitted, new fluid (5.1), but what pads? I've heard good and bad of the EBC greens and only good about the Pagids. What would you recomend? are the Pagids worth all that money? You advice please, I'm dropping the car off this afternoon.. Many thanks Simon

My car's just been returned and everything looks fine - the strange tinny rattles are all in place so no worries there then... However, the coolant level looks quite low. A centimetre or so below the mininimum mark. It's due for a service in about three or four weeks (before 1st lotus I think). Do I need to get this sorted? I have tried reading the handbook which kind of implies that it's better off being too low than too high. If I really do need to get this sorted, does anyone have any idea where I'd get it from (without flogging to NW in Birmingham). The handbook says that it's something called Havoline XLC Extended Life Coolant with Organic Acid Technolo…

OK, I'm trying to re-bond my driver side window back into the winding mechanism and first step is to get the door panel out. I'm in S1, btw. Trouble is, to get door panel out, I have to remove window winder handle. First four allen bolts (the visible ones) came out OK, so the lever bit came away no probs. That exposed the centre hub with a recessed allen headed bolt. Except that the allen headed bolt is completely rounded out (methinks: someones been in here before...). I figure the best way to get it out is to cut a slot i the head and tackle it with a screwdriver. If that is the best plan, my question is: what tool would you recommend for cutting a screwdriver-…

High, I'm new to this site so excuse me if I'm asking a daft question. I've owned my 98 Elise for around 4 months now, I drive it every day and think its a blast. I took the car for an MOT today and it failed on the emission test, as the Lambda reading was too high. The mechanic said I may have a problem with the CAT or the lambda sensor. He also reckoned that a lot of K series powered cars suffer on this test and that a petrol additive and a good thrash, to get the engine temperature nice and high, might do the trick. Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so was the fix relatively painless?

I've suffered a rather odd fault this week. I was siting outside a shop with the engine idling for about 10 minutes, when the NS radiator hose decided to pop off, emptying the entire contents of the cooling system onto the road. Has anyone else suffered this fault? I think I've got away likely. I've refilled the system, bled it through and the car seems to be running OK, at the moment! I'm now rather concerned that this rapid change in engine temperature might enduce a HGF. Any thoughts?

I hate to start a thread like this as my first post because every man and his dog has an opinion on oil....but im gonna anyway. First of all hi to all you guys (and maybe gals? very pc), and i'll get on with it. Having been through Mobil, Castrol, RedLine, 76, triple R and motul to name but a few, I have finally found an oil that seems to do everything it claims. I have not had the chance to conduct a strip down yet, or even to show a conclusive long term test, but Since I started running an oil called Royal Purple (which im told isnt particulaly well known in the UK,have any of you ever heard of it?), my gearchanges have become a little less noisy and the engine is r…

Hi All, need help. Filled up last night and on re-fitting the fuel cap felt it was not right, but on my way out so looked today. Key turns, no hiss and no removal . Cap just keeps going round. Any one able to help, the tank will just about keep me on the road till next weekend. Archives at British-cars didn't turn up anything except the thought that a new one is £100 ouch! Please help. I have a problem with the rev counter on my S1, sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. The times that it doesnt work if I tap on top of the stack the needle sparks into life and works until I turn the ignition off. Last week it gave up all together, no amount of tapping on top of the stack would get it to work again. Ive had a look through the archives and a few people with similar problems have cured it by removing the stack and reseating the multi plug at the back of the stack. Friday I removed the stack, removed the multi plug, cleaned the contacts refitted and it still didnt work. I repeated the above procedure 3 times and on the third attempt the needle s…

Suffered my first HGF yesterday on the Hagley Road. Had to abort and get the AA out when i got to The Dog at Bearwood. Passed a pressure test and then blew up after a coolant refill. Have to say Nick Whales have been great, dropped it off yesterday and they've lent me a car to get home and to work in each day. Symptoms were sludgy coolant and pressure release through the cap and excessive fluctuating temperatures Was booked in for C service on monday, glad this happened beforehand !!! Johnny M

Am having a weird problem?? with my coolant, when cold and on the flat i can't see any coolant in the tank, so i topped it up to the min level, wen t out for a blast and checked, and when hot the coolant was at Max (which is all correct)...But the next day, i've checked the coolant level again, and its vanished from the tank. There are no leaks from what i can see and smell, there is no white gunk in the oil as i've checked the Dipstick and oil filler cap. Where is all the coolant going??

Anyone out there had the front edge of their S1 soft top lift at speed? Mine has always sat high on the near side and over night will lift so the plastic strip on the roof is at about 45 deg. near side only. Same problem with 2 roofs. At speed it has lifted so the rood baloons like 60s rag tops. Any ideas anyone? I have measured the distance fron the roof edge to the keyhole fixings at the rear and thete is 1 - 2mm in it max! All ideas welcomed

Made some adjustments to the Hurrican yesterday, and checked the throttle to make sure it was not catching. I was stood next to the exhaust when blipping the throttle and noticed that the exhaust was "popping" when I lifted off the throttle - something I have not noticed before. I put a piece of paper next to the exhaust and noticed what appeared to be fuel (?) on the paper. Bit concerned. Any ideas? I have reset the IAVC and cannot really think of anything else. Is there something I should be looking out for? Cheers Simon :?
