why duratec

thats heavy too and's got old fashioned [weak] bearing caps...

when you could have a light, better K????

SERIOUSLY

Can anybody else hear that? ...I think a record has got stuck.

I hear the sound of your cynacism - you know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Just to add my 2p. I had a S1 with the Lotus 135 conversion and it was great. Had it for a few years and had no problems at all.

Then I wanted more power. I had a look around on the lotus forums and at the time KingK was still active on Seloc as was Scuffers etc. I loved the fact that out of the box, with no mods, the Honda would rev to 8500 and put out about 220bhp. There were a few places doing the conversion back then and perhaps DIY kits were just coming out, I can't remember. It seemed almost factory fit too and came with warranty etc, plus a nice 6 speed box.

The only person doing the K to 200+bhp was KingK (I would say Simon, but it confuses issues :) ) and I just wondered what would happen if I had any problems, would only this one person be able to sort it out as nobody else was offering this sort of performance (That i could find) and therefore know the ins and outs of a modified engine.

The Honda I could almost pretty much take to any normal Honda specialist as the engine was stock. If I wanted it to go to a Honda Lotus place, then I have a choice of a few. The best of which in my opinion is Brooke Kensington, I can't rate them highly enough!

I did think about the KingK option for a while, but then a pre converted Honda came along and I snapped it up and not looked back. I'd love to drive a 200+bhp KingK Elise though and then who knows what'd happen then if I ever decided to change again.

why duratec?

Lots of N/A torque (2.3)...."Son, there ain't no substitute for cubic inches"!

It connects to the Rover gearbox.

Rebuilding my K to its current spec (Scholar Evo2 1.9, 218bhp) would be expensive, when I can get a brand new 2.3L unit installed for the price of a rebuilt K.

Finally, it would be MY choice.

One thing I love over other forums is just how friendly everyone on MLOC is, everyone is civil enough to respect that people make different choices to other people for their own reasons, but you.... "king k" have issues!

You are right, - if you are saying that I am uncomfortable with the K being branded as a grenade waiting to explode when aside from the cooling issue [for which there is now a comprehensive soution] the causes lie entirely with less than competant aftermarket engine building, as reviewed here;-

Why I don't like [what gets done to] the Rover K series and

you are right.

Or if you say I am furious about the downright untruths that got pedalled on seloc and Exiges by one individual, then you would be right, I have issues. Who wouldn't?

Three points there,

- firstly the 2.3L Duratec costs £9360 incl vat, which is a lot of money for a production engine with a set of TBs, and a lightweight flywheel which has been balanced independantly, rather than to the stripped crank [always a second best option]. The touring car engine may have cost £15 grand, but can be built on OE rods, crank, cheaper clutch, cast [as opposed to billt sttel] cams etc etc etc, it is on a plenum [carbon fibre] all of which could be costed out, bringing the cost to or below the duratec cost.

and,

http://www.dyno-plot.co.uk/dyno/dynoplot/id%3D841_914%26sort%3Drec%26but_sea%3Dqs%26sea_simple%3DSIMON+ERLAND/index.htm

remember the result here was with retarded ignition for 95 Ron fuel and meeting BTTC regs which have cost 15lbft torque and 45bhp.

Second, the Honda sourced PG1 box is a perfectly good box, except that like most new OEM boxes, had it's metal caged bearings costed down to plastic caged 10 years ago [ this in OEM language significantly reduces the torque rating of the box], these are ok in road use but melt in track use causing - well problems, my solutions significantly rework the gears, fit all metal caged bearings [my own] a new mainshaft to work with proper track clutches, LSDs and concentric hydraulic release bearings. The torque of a Duratec would be an issue.

and thirdly SWLotus give the weight of their Duratec as 112kg, that compares to 84.5kg for a stock Rover, or 78kg for one of mine wet sumped, so you are still adding 34kg into the back of the car.

Well 2 things here

- firstly the game has moved on from the 220bhp K series, all the work I have done has not only addressed the underlining cooling issue, but significantly moved the game on in terms of drivability , power and torque, the old 220bhp result is a thing of the past.

secondly, there are people who have seen what I have done and want to make it commercial -= I am talking about componant suppliers and Lotus dealers, the jury is out on that, my aim was just to prove reliiable strong engines wer possible and to write a book, but we'll see, maybe I can sell the work, or do something to make all the time and investment go to producing engines in scale.... dunno, right now just finishing off what has been a long trek, and race the hillclimber next year, hopefully take a load of records and then we'll see. -

Gentleman, this is becoming a bit petty and tiresome. A shame as some good information is mixed in. You can call each other what you like via PM. Forums are about different opinions can we keep it civil please.

Simon, can we have some clarifiction on a number of points with regar to this engine?

1. When was this engine fitted to Colin Turkingtons BTCC car?

2. Which of the 2006 BTCC races did he use it in?

3. The dyno plot date is 2011. Does this mean this engine is a recent creation or is that just the latest dyno?

4. Do you have any more engines like this, or was this a one off?

Im confused by the way this topic is going, if your wanting to offer your services to potential customers and engine build or whatever, why not just post some details on what your offering people? I duno , finding this rather confusing

I feel the same frustration reading this thread as I did a number of years ago repeatedly on Seloc and other forums.

Simon, I genuinely wish you well in developing the K-Series but please just concentrate on letting the products speak for themselves. In that respect I don't mean aggressively pushing them on forums and having a go at all other K-series builders and transplant offerings, but by letting the owners of the cars with your engines promote them by good personal experience. Develop more, talk less, and let other people get on with their choices, whether you personally agree with them or not.

Pesky, Daniel and Steve, glad you're all enjoying the Honda's...not my personal choice either but they do go jolly well don't they?! ;)

Chris
