Does your engine have a hydraulic tensioner or mechanical? I'm guessing the latter but it's worth watching the hydraulic tensioner operating on here as the movement frequency looks similar to the noise you're hearing:

The later 24v engines (like mine) have the mechanical tensioner.

This sounds very similar but seems to be from the top end not the bottom.

Russell - Flywheel is at the other end from noise and pulley nut is as tight as fook!

Timbo - it's looking like the tension on the cambelt. A fellow LB builder who specialises in Busso engines is going from Cardiff to Lister Bell and back on Saturday to collect 2 cars. He's offered to bring all his kit and call in on the way back as it's not that far out of his way.

So on Saturday he'll look over it and we'll see what he reckons.

Gutted for you Leigh but I’m sure you’ll get it sorted. If building these kits was easy, everyone would be doing it!

It was a bit deflating Drage, I'll be honest. But sure we can get it sorted. Another excuse to buy more tools and learn new skills

Glad to hear you should be getting sorted! Having worked a bit on the engine when we had an Alfa - including rectifying errors made a by a supposed 'specialist' - I know they can be prone to odd noises, etc. 😀

If you Google "Alfa V6 tensioner fitting" there's an excellent pdf from Litens aftermarket that covers-off correct fitting and adjustment, including correcting tension issues.

No more noise!

It was the cambelt tension. It's wasn't tight enough. Very specific way of tensioning the belt which needs cam locks fitting, cam pulleys loosening and a dial gauge and extender to stick it down a spark plug hole.

The very kind fellow LB builder who traveled to LB from Cardiff today called in on his way back. He's an Alfa engine specialist and rebuilds them. Brought all his tools with him and redid the belt whilst showing me exactly how to do it, for future reference.

So now that's sorted we can get the wiring finished and it can go off to have a body fitted

If you're certain it isn't from the top end then try the cambelt tensioner.

👍 Glad you're sorted!
