Kelvin M Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Hello there, Complete newby here, only bought the Elise S2 on Tuesday afternoon and back offshore Tuesday night so I haven't driven it yet as an owner. Has anyone used the stick on front number plate, the correct size and colour and placed it just above the badge. I guess it's illegal but it would help with the speed bumps which will be a potential problem. There you go, first post of many to come, I'll need loads of information to catch up. Cheers.
Greg.g Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Welcome Kelvin I haven't used a stick on number plate, but i used to use 3/4 size front plates. A few of us were on a run in wales about 3 years ago when pc plod decided to take a dislike to us. I can quite honestly say that we were doing absolutely nothing wrong, our engines were cold as we had only just left an overnight stop/hotel. Anyway, we were all pulled over and they ran checks on our cars. I think there was about 6 of us pulled over and 5 got done for 3/4 size plates. I had not adjusted or moved any of the digits, it was just 3/4 size. A week or so later i received a £30 fine. A couple of days after that i had a letter from the dvla. I have a 5 digit private plate. They informed me that i had been reported for mis-use of my registration, and if reported again, they would have the right to withdraw my rights to the plate. Apparently, you only lease the rights to use that plate and they can be withdrawn. So now i have a fully legal, but cut down size plate. As long as you use the correct font, size and spacing and leave a 11mm border, thats all thats required. In my case with 5 digits it amounts to about 2/3rds of the original size. I also attach it with velcro so if it does scrape or get knocked off, its easy to replace. Sorry about the long moan, but if you can give the local plod one less reason to take an interest in your car, that has to be a good thing in my opinion. Anyway, enjoy driving your car when you get back on shore and post up a few piccies as well Greg
JonS Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Hi Kelvin, Welcome to MLOC I have the correct sized number plate in the right position at the bottom of the clam, but I have used strong velcro to stick it on. I have made sure it is the lowest point of the car between the wheels so if I here it scraping over a speed bump then I know its time to stop, remove the plate and check the height. I've only scraped it a couple of times, mainly in car parks with stupidly high humps, but it seems to work ok for me - and my car has been lowered as well.
Martin R Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Welcome to MLOC. As above, i use a full size number plate set about 5mm lower than the front edge of the clam. Its a good warning on ferrys and speed bumps. Also take them at an angle as this helps. I dont have much trouble and i run 120mm front ride height.
chris_h Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Pete F has a stick on one, personally not my cup of tea but it looks ok.
John FISH Curtis Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Welcome to MLOC. Personally, number plates on the front clam do not look good and damage the paint. Bottom of my number plate is flush with the bottom of the number plate mount. 13 large speed bumps from my house to the main road, never had a problem.
JonS Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Pete F has a stick on one, personally not my cup of tea but it looks ok. Apologies for the thread theft - but that photo wreaks of "over-heating in traffic so we've pulled onto the hard shoulder" to me! ;-)
chris_h Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Apologies for the thread theft - but that photo wreaks of "over-heating in traffic so we've pulled onto the hard shoulder" to me! ;-) Nah, Pete just thought he'd clean the tarmac for the Austrians
Steve J Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 That's a bit mean posting that pic of Pete's stricken motor together with his boot lid support.
lummo Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 ... i use a full size number plate set about 5mm lower than the front edge of the clam. Me too. I'd much rather scrape the number plate than the bottom of the clam! Welcome to MLOC btw. We need piccies when you get back please!
Laura Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Welcome to mloc Kevin. I had a smaller sized front plate on my elise and it wasnt long before it resulted in a £30 fine and replaced with a plate with the correct sized lettering but slightly trimmed edges. We have a full sized one on the Exige and although it has been replaced twice (nothing too serious, just a couple of dodge kerbs in carparks, speed bumps are no problem) i would prefer to have the warning of hearing that scrape and replacing it for £17 instead of damaging the front clam. I like the look of the plate on Pete's car but not sure if every car could pull it off
