MikePMC Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 After first seeing this post my thoughts were "Poor B45t4rd!" and "Oh god" but I have to admit, reading through the posts it looks like you are making a proper effort and I hope you succeed. It's different from the norm and if it goes well 200+bhp should make you grin! Mike
Phil.S Posted March 30, 2008 Author Posted March 30, 2008 OK this weekend: Cambelt is on and engine timed up Gear selector cable bracket sorted Drive shafts are in (straight swap) Engine mount is out to be made (thanks to lee (blondone) of here) All in all I'm happy and to top it off sunburnt! Oh and i managed to run over my foot trying to stop the car rolling down my driveway - ouch.
Phil.S Posted April 13, 2008 Author Posted April 13, 2008 Ok another update. Finally the engine is properly mounted! Lee (Blondone) has made me a work of art of an ally mount and a spacer for the cambelt side mount that looks like this on its own: and this when fitted on the car: Once again a big thanks to Lee for all the work he's put in for very little return! In the meantime I've been busy with the welder modifying the bottom sump mount into this: Which should stop the engine trying to escape when bolted to the old eliseparts solid bottom mount: Next challenge is this bit: Wishbone fouls the sump and will foul the oil filter or a remote takeoff. Think I'm going to chop the straight piece out and put a 2 bars in to form a cross to keep the strength rather than just move it down 4 inches.. Anyway I've set myself the goal of getting it as near as dammit to being finished by next sunday as we're moving house scarliy soon.... All in all though its looking good sat in the back properly now - oh yeah this week I'm going to star working out the wiring in my lunch breaks too!
Phil.S Posted April 19, 2008 Author Posted April 19, 2008 Got the cooling system plumbed in over today and yesterday: Including the leccy water pump which doesn't seem like much for the best part of £160 And modified the wishbone to clear the sump and oil filter which took ages and was a total PITA to get off anyway : (shite pic) Wiring tomorrow and startup on monday - thats the plan......
Martin R Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Fantastic thread Phil and good luck with the start up. A video of the moment would be good for posterity and all that
Phil.S Posted April 19, 2008 Author Posted April 19, 2008 Don't know about the vid martyn - the swearing may make it an after 10pm showing only!!
Martin R Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Always better with a few FFS throw in or a whoop of joy
dobbo Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Nice idea with the wishbone, but I think I'd want someone (expert) to have a look and make sure it's no weaker than the original. Triangles are inherently strong shapes but I'd be concerned about twisting forces with the changes you've had to make, especially as you seem to have used smaller section bar for the mods. Have you had the welds checked ? If not, I can do some dye penetrant inspection on them for you.
Martin R Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Chris good point. I believe they have to do very similar on the Honda conversions. IIRC its to allow for drive shaft clearance.

The bar is the same size.as the joining bars also its solid, not tube like the original so I think it will be just fine. Its a seriously solid structure I did a bit of playin with a scissor jack and vice as I had the same concerns.
dobbo Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Cool ! At least you've thought about it and done some testing. I imagine a lot of people might not have bothered. Can't wait to see the end product !
stockhome Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Phil Great thread I await every new post with bated breath, i really can't wait to see it finished.
Phil.S Posted April 22, 2008 Author Posted April 22, 2008 Well I failed to get it running last night. She cranks fires and then dies. Mega p*ssed off that I ran out of time. Seem to have traced the problem down o the fuel pump cutting out (fuse blows for some reason) so hopefully tonight........
Ladders Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Blimey! You've made rapid progress with that phil! Hope you don't mind if I give some 'constructive critisism' with regards the wishbones? IMO the two triangles you've made, where the origonal bar went are across, now dont really do anything. Would you be better to have a curved bar that does from the origonal points and clears the sump still? Anyway you probably CBA to that now and it'll be fine anyway!
