fentuz Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 If the Vx220/VX220turbo rear suspensions (espcially springs) are much more different than S2 kit, perhaps it would be a good idea to see if they would suit your conversion. what is the upgrade on audi conv???

Could be an option alright. Might just find out the spring rates etc from the VX220 owners forum and see what the differences actually are between the S1 and the VXT.
jannerboy Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Hi Phil, Been watching you're progress for a while...nice one! My mate lives in Redditch (Grant Baker...you may know him)...could we pop around some time and have a look? John
cheeky_chops Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 been watching for a while - congrats!!! I woud deff suggest some firmer springs (cant remember if you posted your setup earlier) - so would suggest nitron or ohlins. i went from a 2.2 to a vxt with lotus spec ohlins. Never noticed the extra 60kg, but the firmer springs/quality dampers control the wheel/body so much better. Watch that turbo spooling up fast in the wet!!
S1 Steve Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Brilliant Phil, well done mate Bring it to the Doni evening a lot of us are doing. here
Phil.S Posted June 23, 2008 Author Posted June 23, 2008 SING: One step forward and two steps back Thought I'd be parking it up in my garage this weekend as its in my dads garage at the mo' but turns out the Gearbox main bearings are fooked. Due to the physical size of the turbo engine the gearbox wouldnt come out with the engine in so the whole lot had to come out!! When I bought it the bloke said the release bearing had gone so never thought anything of it because I changed that. Damn. Oh well. So there's a gearbox rebuild this week (I'll post some pics as its a PG1 if anyones interested), I'm also going to rebuild the turbo as thats the only thing left untouched. Still hoping to have it all back together by sunday Jannerboy - I know of grant (if its GBE grant!) but have never met him. He lives 5 mins from me so when its back on the road we can meet up and you boys can have a look around it. He was going to come to see it a while back actually but never did. Steve - Very very tempted by Donnington indeed, I'm full on craving some track action after my last donnington visit......
JonS Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I see you have some of your best friends in that photo Phil - grinder, hack saw, WD40 and.. a can of red bull! Good luck with the bearbox & turbo rebuild.
Phil.S Posted June 23, 2008 Author Posted June 23, 2008 are your tires on the right way? Hehe well spotted - the wheels came off to get the driveshafts out don't worry they'll go back on the right way on rebuild. Can thank my dad for that one!!
Phil.S Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 Took some time to beef up the bulkhead heat shielding while the engine was out - NASA would be proud! And shrouded the turbo: I used nimbus G2 heatshield which is pretty impressive. After getting the engine hot I could still touch the turbo heatshield with my bare hands! Rebuilt the gearbox with the steel caged bearings: Stuck the engine and box back in on Staurday, piped it up, wired it up, fluids in, fired it up on sunday morning, shoved it in gear and..... Nothing - no gears Realised straight away I'd ballsed up the reassembly of the selector mechanism as it wasn't selecting any gears at all. I could have cried! Drained fluids, took off all the wiring loom, disconnected hoses, engine out, gearbox off and split and sure enough i hadn't engaged the selection lever properly with the mechanism in the 'box. Kicked self and reassembled. 'Box back on engine, engine into car, piped up, wired up, fluids in, fired up and YES!! I have gears and no graunching noises. CBA to take it out as it was 8.30 on sunday evening and still had to pack up. Stil I didn't think 4 hours to get the engine out and back in and running again was too shabby. Just got to set up the gear selectors mounted on the 'box, tidy the loom and I'm finally done (like I've said every week for the past month!!). Massive thanks to my dad and his mate chris for helping me all weekend even after all the foul language being thrown their way (oopsy).
dobbo Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Cool ! Can't wait to hear a review of it on the road / track. Well done, to all involved.
Steve G Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Been reading for a while with great interest. Most impressed! Good on you for giving it a go!
Phil.S Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 OK got the selectors set up last night and finally managed to get it home. First impressions are its feckin quick. Not really any great amount of turbo lag maybe half a second or so between foot to the floor and on boost which is livable with. The sound though is just fantastic. The engines fairly quiet on tickover but it sounds great under load. Loads of turbo whistling and wooshing!! Handling wise you can definately feel the extra weight in the back but its strange because it actually feels more planted and positive round the bends on the road. Before it always felt quite neutral maybe a little understeery if anything. The front end still feels quite light but now when you apply some more power the car feels really planted like you can totally lose the understeer - maybe this is the LSD working? Until everythings properly set up and I've had a good drive of it its hard to say any more. I'll be interested to see what its like on track though - aiming for the 6th of August Donnington day if there's still space.....

Congratulations, being following this for a while, makes a nice change to all the Honda boys! You should look at doing a kit as others maybe interested......
