richbk
Hi folks.Looking for some advice before I give up and drive to Burton !!Drove the lotus last week and an unpleasant grinding noise deleveloped on the front drivers side brakes. Appears to be rotational so noise appears briefly for each rotation of the wheel / disc when car is moving under braking. My front brake set up is floating Ali belled discs with standard calipers and pads. They chatter all the time which is annoying but I can live with, but this sounds totally different ?I can try and record something as I know descriptions are difficult to diagnose. I have had the wheel off and can't see anything obvious at all. No new marks on disc or dragging etc. When wheel spun without brakes ??Also if I do need to take the discs off etc to investigate can floating set up be changed to fixed to remove the chatter on road driving ??ThxRichard
richbk
could it be a record - 144 views and no ideas ........... or my descriptive powers are really poor . off to my friends garage tomorrow for a strip down (of the brakes) and see what we can find - any thoughts on the floating to fixed discs ?? thx richbk
jody391
Hey Rich sorry only just seen this!.. Ok I have similar setup Elise parts floating at front and CL5 pads. Mine does similar some times if the anti chatter/squeal buffers move from there position, you will need to remove the pads and replace the buffers
russelld
Leigh had similar problems with his brakes which were floating bells, not sure how he cured the problem but perhaps worth a pm Russ
Dr H
Leigh had similar problems with his brakes which were floating bells, not sure how he cured the problem but perhaps worth a pm Russ Well remembered Russ. Drove me mad! In the end the cure was a new set of bells. Something was happening with my bells and it was making a grinding noise. Still no idea what it was but new ones cured it. Are yours Nitons? I still have my old bells if you want to borrow them and try them out. Could rule out yours if nothing else.

richbk
Hi Leigh . Yes they are nitty on bells and ap discs. Currently being striped down and rebuilt to check for any mystery problems/ ingress of matter to be causing the problem. Thanks for the offer of your bells, are your spares the set that was causing the problem ? I.e if I fit them instead of mine should I have the same problem ? How much did you pay for replacements, I'm trying to save for new seats for the car for spring . Cheers Rich

Dr H
Rich The spare ones I have are the ones that were causing me issues. However they might be OK with your rotors. Who knows - it's all a bit of a mystery. There is nothing obviously wrong with them. I also have a set of bobbins and bolts too. Happy for you to give them a go. You never know. Only takes 40 mins to an hour to change remove the wheels, change everything and get it back together. Leigh
richbk
Hi Leigh. Tried to drop you a PM but reckon your overloaded with stratos message !! I have been to see Gav and he thinks problem is similar to yours . Would it be possible to borrow your discs to see if that provides a solution. I would ideally like to take my old grooved discs plus your discs to Gav and see which solves the issue. Happy to collect, or pay for courier to gav's or meet up , which ever is convenient for yourself. Many thanks again for the kind offer. How many bolts / bobbins do your discs use btw?
