More Power Out The K Series?!

Hi guys, not very technical when it comes to cars. Just wondering what mods i could do to perhaps gain a few extra horses. I've heard of porting? Has any had this done? Is as simple as changing the head once you buy the ported head or does other stuff need changing too?

Is there anything else thats a cheaper alternative to gaining more power?

Thanks.

Whats your staring point 120? How deep are your pockets?

Yes 120, not to deep. But if it'sworth the extra bit of fun i could reach down into the fluffy stuff haha

Assuming you're on the 120........

For around £500, you can get an extra 15ish ponies by buying (and fitting) an exhaust, decat, 135 cams, 52mm Throttle body, and I'd personally fit an alloy inlet manifold too (although other people beg to differ, but it helps top end).

Extra £1000, and you could probably get a second hand emerald and a worked head, which should be enough for 150-160

Go Honda, save yourself the grief

Alex behave yourself. A well built K up to 170ish bhp will do 100K miles and as many trackdays as you like with a fair wind.

Hahaha!

just about everything is covered above, however another option is engine swap for a rover VVC unit

Where do you drive your car and do you rev it to the limiter ?

Making improvements to the breathing, porting the head, changing exhaust manifold, induction kits will only have minimal effect without a cam change. Changing cams will make the biggest difference

the other breathing improvements will bring out the best of a cam change. Be aware though that changing cams will alter the character of the engine, if you gain top end power it will be at the expense of low down grunt ( there is no free lunch ). Jody has swapped to MGF 135 cams and is very pleased with the results, on its own a very cost effective way of gaining power. Cams any more aggressive than the 135s will more than likely need a programmable ECU and a change of pistons ( standard pistons tend to disintegrate at over 150 / 160 bhp.)

If you use your car mainly on the road a well driven standard K series car is difficult to beat on b roads.

Cheers I'll have a read up over the weekend! B roads and A roads are where the fun is at. Ive ordered the Hurricane inductio kit....not for gains just the extra noise I've read about. Will see what its like when it arrives and i get it fitted.

Over time and through gradual/natural repalcement I've had a Hurricane induction, 52mm Throttle Body, ported & polished head, Janspeed manifold and RoadSport exhaust and the last time it was on a RR I was at about 126BHP - which I was disappointed about.

It's been off the road for a few weeks for some work (cat disintegrated and blocked the exhaust)

I picked it up yesterday and am currently running without a cat as I have one on 8 week back order and it feels like a completely different car.

I notice that you're in Brum and I'd be more than happy to go for a spin to let you see how it drives with all of the above, if you're interested ?

My car is standard s2 save for a Hangar 111 back box and K&N 57i cone filter. It made 124 bhp on the rollers recently - and I am confident the reading was pretty accurate.

If you just want noise the K&N is much cheaper than a Hurricane.

A lot of people find different exhaust manifolds actually reduce power and/or torque over standard.

The 135 cams are a brilliant mod - they should give you 135 bhp with a K&N and back box.

Dont change the plastic plenum.

I've done cams too, it changes way it drives smile.png

Other option is a 160 engine, blank vvc and fit 285's, DHTB's, emerald. Could do that for £3k
