nick_j007 Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 I saw an Elise with a front plate that was markedly smaller than mine recently. It looked far better IMO. What's the legal position on trimming away the white sections please and if it's a 'goer' where can I go to get one? Thank you. Happy Saturday night. Nick
scatty Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 You can either trim it yourself or get it done somewhere like Craigsplates. I think mines from there and you can pick your size. Have a look in my garage, that's normal size lettering but chopped down I always go with the theory if the lettering and spacing are the legal size you will be ok. Mine are but the rest is chopped down, and I've not been stopped ever. Make the lettering smaller and you possibly will. Well it would be an excuse to stop you. But I think they look loads better that bit smaller.
kayj_prod Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 IIRC, the lettering has to be the correct font/size/spacing, but the plate itself only has to be big enough to provide the required border around the letters. Sadly, 7 characters in mine, so no cutting down for me!
Martin R Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Here you go. In the comments box ask them to make it to minimum UK legal size. They look a lot better. I will do a pic of mine when im not at work. http://www.fancyplates.com/

pablo_paul Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 I have a small plate from fancy plates sitting in the garage i haven't got round to fitting it yet. It seems to be debatable if they are legal. Just remember if they don't have a BS/EC mark on them they are illegal no matter what the font/spacing and i think you can only get a mark if they are to the specified size. I have the European spec sitting on my desk at work that I need to go through for a work issue but i think it's pretty watertight.
DeanB Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 The solution: Get a little plate, and attach it with velcro (it wont come off) Keep your old plate in the boot, also with velcro attached When Mr Plod pulls you over, distract him and swap new plate for old. When he asks about your illegal number plate you say "I think you must be mistaken officer, my number plate is regulation size. Are you O.K? you haven't been smoking anything you shouldn't have you? nothing I need to be telling your sergeant about is there?"

I'll take my chances with "the plod"
grez Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 This page gives all the details but in short the border around the letters needs to be at least 11mm, my front plate conforms to that and looks loads better than a full size plate.
scatty Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Just get it done. You will only get a warning first time and told to change it. But you will look cool until you do. I've not been stopped in 6 years with correct size lettering and spacing. Depends how small you want to go! It's only illegal if you get caught!!!! Or drive behind itgivesyouwings, he has the smallest ever! Oooo errrrrrrrr!
nick_j007 Posted May 21, 2012 Author Posted May 21, 2012 Thanks guys. Will buy a front plate from fancyplates. It says: 3/4 size std plate - 390mm X 84mm I assume that's what you're talking about? Cheers. Nick
Martin R Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 I think 3/4 size may be illegal. As i said i just put minimum UK size in the comments box. I will do a pic and measure it in a bit Here you go, front is 495mm x 105mm. Fits a treat between the stripes. Rear is 520mm x 110mm It looks a lot better than normal ones IMO whilst still being legal apparently.
scatty Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 the lettering certainly is martin.... but agreed its a much nicer size.....with normal font theres no way on earth you would get stopped....with that lettering and a narky copper it could happen.... oooooooo yellow and green stripes, lovely. i look forward to seeing it on sunday....
DeanB Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Scatty Martin can't come on Sunday now - Russ is coming instead.
