KurtB Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Just as a reminder, on our jaunt earlier this year, plod stopped me when pulling out of the place we stopped for breakfast and told me about my front number plate. Legal lettering and spacing (Scatty took a picture) but only 3/4 size. I considered it a warning and to save myself the potential £60 fine, I took to buying a legal front plate. Admittedly it looks pants with its 5 digits with a massive space each side, but I can't be arsed with the hassle from plod...(being in the Armed Forces makes my tolerance of pettiness a little smaller than that of my civilian colleagues, and I fear what response I may give if my mood isn't right!)
fentuz Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I believe this is updated since it comes from legal authority website www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/forms/~/media/pdf/leaflets/V796.ashx
Lee Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Been running my "standard" 3/4 sized plate with standard text for nearly 5 years now. Never been stopped or questioned about it.
Dixie Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Hi, From what i understand the number plate only needs to be big enough to allow an 11mm space around all lettering and a 33mm space between the 2 bodies of letters. I've got 3 "1"s in my plate so i took quite a large amount off. It was MOT'd last week with that plate on an went through without so much as an advisery. I found the easiest way to trim it was to use a bench mounted grinding wheel. It was a bit of a bodge at the time as i'm just smashed the corner off the full size plate but fortunately i cut the damaged area off.
mneil Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 what a difference! super quick and all legal; asked for lettering and spacing to be legal then length as small as poss. thanks for the link.
Eric Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Just as a reminder, on our jaunt earlier this year, plod stopped me when pulling out of the place we stopped for breakfast and told me about my front number plate. Legal lettering and spacing (Scatty took a picture) but only 3/4 size. I considered it a warning and to save myself the potential £60 fine, I took to buying a legal front plate. I also had a warning from plod about my number plate which (at the time) didn't have the obligatory space between the two "halves". I did heed that warning though and reluctantly replaced the really great looking no-space version with a really boring looking legal version. Having said that, I still have both the GB Euro star on one side and a tasty Lotus logo on the other - nice. So there are some advantages to a full size plate!!
KurtB Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 I think mneil has done it for me....I'll get mine ordered later on! I think all that space I have each side of my 5 digit reg is pointless.
