Just been emailed a draft of the one for our S4s...

It's number 38 of 92 cars made for the UK market. Only two made in Silk Red metallic, ours being the second. Quite rare then! matrix.gif

I think the other 90 are yellow like mine judging by some of the photos at Club Lotus Day!

Graham sent me mine in the e-mail today. I've had a fascinating discussion with him by email over the last few days. We've really learned a lot about the history of the car. As for the rareness quotient, he said this:

Your car was the 4th out of 69 cars (worldwide),

Your car was the 3rd out of 35 cars for the UK,

Your car was the 1st out of 10 cars in Silk Red (worldwide),

Your car was the 1st out of 7 cars in Silk Red (for the UK),

Your car was the only car in Silk Red with grey leather trim (worldwide).

(Note: there was 1 UK car in a one-off metallic BMW red with light grey leather).

As Elaine says, pretty rare. Of course, with only 69 cars worldwide, and presumably about 20 colours to choose from and four or five choices of interior trim, it's probably unlikely that any two will be identical.

It made me laugh, though. I rang Graham to ask him to do this for me, and we chatted for a bit. He said, "Hold on. Do you want me to grab the build file?" Now the car is 20 years old, so I fondly imagined him going to the cellar and dusting off a file on long aisles of archive storage boxes, but he was gone for perhaps a minute. Lotus have obviously built so few cars that all the build files are within arm's reach of the phone. We really do have hand-built, boutique machines. Fascinating, and rather fun, I think.

Overall, I rate the experience of getting this certificate of provenance very highly. It has been fascinating to explore the history of my car, almost a bit of forensic archeology. Perhaps it was special to me because my car was a press car, and so there's more known about its early life than most, I expect. But it was a great experience. Graham appears to be a top bloke, and I recommend anyone to ring him up and ask for the low-down on their cars.
