S2 Elise 111S Spec

Hello All,

I'm looking at returning to Elise ownership after selling the S1 a few years back.

I have my eye on a tidy S2, advertised as a 111s (the has all the genuine graphics in the right places). I'm taking my info from Elises.co.uk which states the car has leather interior, and carpets of which this car doesn't. This, according to the website above means the car is a 111.

The car is a 2003 so no electric windows etc.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Many thanks

Lee

Im not sure, but didn't they start calling all K series 111s "S" when they brought out the Toyota engined "R" model, to distinguish it?

So a late model 111 k series car will be an "S" even if it hasn't got all the luxury kit on?

That's what I initially thought, but this doesn't seem to be a 'late' car. The registration begins with AU which if my memory serves me correctly is a Norfolk car, could it have been an early Lotus press car?

Mines a 53 plate badged up as: Elise S

With red leather interior

Cloth mats

Lecy windows

But as far as I'm aware it's 120bhp

It also has an 'e' emblem on the passenger side rear quarter level with the window.

I have a copy of Lotus Life dated July 2002. This edition has the front page lead "The New 111s" and states.

That the new 111 range gets the 160ps VVC Engine controlled by the K4 management system in both 111 and 111s guise, the 111s includes full leather, interior carpets, and uprated audio system.

At the time this raised the Elise derivatives to five: Elise standard, Elise Race Tech, Elise Sports Tourer, Elise 111, and Elise 111s.

There then follows an independent review of the 111s by Brett Fraser. He mentions the exhaust with the flap that opens above 4k revs, and the modified double air box.

Both get the 8 spoke but the 111s gets cross drilled discs up front.

I took delivery of my 111s back in Feb 2003 it was brand new, it didn't have central locking or electric windows. It did have cross drilled discs front and rear, along with carpets, a double air box and the flappy exhaust.

I would agree that this is a 111, not a 111s, pretty rare to be honest as the difference between the 111 and 111s cost wise was negligible.

If you want a scan of the magazine blurb drop me a pm.

The S2 156bhp k series has always been a 111s or 111. The early MY02 cars had no electric windows and no central locking. Some will have only been registered in 2003.

My daughter was confused at first when faced with a handle for the windows.

A number of people have dressed up standard 120 cars as 111's. The wheels and alloy intake are not a gurantee. Look for the VVC meck and look at the v5 if you view.

With that registration it comes up on "My car check" as a 111 but not the S version. I put my reg. in and it comes up correctly as a 111S so I assume the app. Is correct.

That has a 156bhp engine, the correct wheels and the three way diffuser. They were also the first to have the bergstorm HVAC. You can tell by the face level air vents in the centre.

Looks like a 111s to me

The engines on standard s2s have a plastic inlet plenum. This one is ally which is in keeping with it being a 111s

The brake disks may have been replaced,

AO and AU are Norfolk registration and usually point to the car being owned by lotus.

Has the rad been upgraded?

It looks good to me. Mint, in fact. But a 111, not a 111s.

That's what I'm thinking but its being sold as a 111S on the PH advert seen here, not a 111

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/lotus/elise-s2/lotus-elise-111s-156bhp-2003/1057767

Perhaps I'm looking into this too much, but potentially spending that much money I want to know its genuine.

Stockhome, yes it's had the ally rad fitted.

Sorry to be ignorant, what is a bergstorm HVAC?

The HVAC thingy is the air-con and (improved) ventilation system.

Maybe the owner just thinks all 111s are 111Ss? It would be an easy mistake to make.

I saw the car in SELOC classifieds this afternoon. If you are interested, give the owner a call - that will give you a pretty good idea of if it is genuine or not.

Hi - I may be able to shed a little light on this.

Quoting from Alastair Clements book 'Lotus Elise' - In June 2002 the most civilised, most comfortable Elise yet appeared with the launch of the S2 111S. The new model was originally to be available as the 111, a pure power upgrade with spartan interior and a price tag of £25,995, but in reality few - if any - were sold without the extra £2000 that turned it into the plusher 111S, with extra spec including leather upholstery and carpets.

So I would read this as a 111 car without the S option pack!
