Broken Heaters / Blowers

Never had any problems with the heaters. I took it in for its MOT yesterday at a local garage and then last night the blowers refused to come on, dead as a donut. Could they have done something in the MOT? Is there a switch or cable or something to check? I need to go out in it today but it'll just steam up in this rain

where did you go?

Take it back and ask if they touched anything that could affect the fan.

Thanks!

Where is the fuse located? I went to Charlie Browns in Hillsborough....I'm not blaming them, its probably coincidence, just wondered if there is anything they could have done during the MOT that would have affected it

If I remember correctly it's under the front access panels - I'm sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong! If it's the bower that's gone it's a front clam off job  .

Its most likely the resister pack that gone with all the rain in the last few days.

The part is quitercheap but a pain and expensive to replace as its a front clam off job. There is now an upgraded one available that sorts out the issue.

well I guess I won't find out without forking out. Its not the fuse for the interior fan, I haven't checked all the others but I doubt they affect it. Have noticed a couple of things though, the seat belt light doesn't function (apart from when starting the engine) and no engine temp is registered until a few minutes into driving it....haven't noticed either of those before but they may well have done it for a while.

I thought the resistors sat next to the fuse box on the front left hand side?

The flashing seatbelt light is normal. Lotus changed it some time ago to just flash on startup. The temp will only read from 70c upwards so unless the car is warm to start with, then you get no reading.

You'll be happy to know the above are not related to the fan heater. That is down to the resistor pack on the blower motor. This sits on the bottom of the blower motor and is thus in about 10mm of rain water no anything other than a completely dry week! Mine went about 6 months ago. When I changed it, it had been in the garage for 3 days and there was still a pool of water around the thing!

I left mine for a while before changing and it took the motor out as well so do it sooner rather than later. The part from lotus is now changed to sit inside the blower motor so it can "dry it's self off" so to say. Saying that, I changed mine 6 months ago but the thing has been stuck in "feet warming mode" for a few days now. Hopefully I can sort this without removing the clam!!

Its also worth checking the connections on the back of the control knob as they sometimes become detached, although its more likely to be the resistor pack. Have a search under heater units on here, theres loads of stuff been posted up about them, and I'm also led to believe that depending on your unit the early ones can be removed without the clam being removed, if you have a/c then its deffo clam off.

quick edit to say its also worth a search on seloc, theres even more on there about them.....one of the worst features of the elise imho

its a clam off job then yea? How much did they charge you, or did you do it yourself?

Did it all myself. The parts alone were over £200, coupled with £500 labour if I got Lotus to do it!

The front clam is fairly easy on the S2 to be fair. Get hold of an S2 technical manual and you'll do it in no time................. Don't quote me on that thought! :)

What you need to do is take your nice car which looks like this.....Take about 4 hours, some spanners, allen keys and a few grazed knuckes and reduce it to this........wrestle the fan out of it and you'll find the resistor pack underneath soaking in water looking burned out and a bit like this......... Then simply re-build it!

It's actualy not that hard, just a bit daunting lifting the clam off, needs 2 people for sure!

just to add my two pence worth, had my s2 for 2 weeks now, and my heater knob is very hard to move, I get air through but it's cold brrrrrrrrr. just had the c service done so no pennies left for heater probs. Anyone got any magic heater dust please. tried to get dash off but couldn't and couldn't see anything through the access panels. Looks like a long cold winter.

lack of garage creates a small problem for me taking apart the car. What part did you order for the resistor pack?

You certainly do need some room to work.Don't know the part no. as we supply Lotus so I blagged it, but there is a kit with a new fan mounting plate with proper resistor on it.

Now that's a different issue, yours must be an early car with the cable operated heater rather than the later servo one.Lube job I recall!
