bertie Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 I bought the resistor pack, that was about £83. The bloke at the garage just charged me £80 to fit it. It got the old mangled one back aswell. The bloke is just cheap, I had to wait a week for him to even look at it What did the new resistor pack look like? If it was the old aluminium die cast box job or even the older plastic with ceramic gobbed on curly resistance wire, you could do this without removing the clam, maybe.
kid phunk Posted October 31, 2008 Author Posted October 31, 2008 It was the new modified pack, included some big metal plates etc. I know they took the clam off cause they took me through the job and complimented the condition of everything, saying I must not drive it properly!

Well they are working at about £10 or £15 and hour, absolutely astonishing! Get in there before they go bust!
jimbo07g41 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 Well they are working at about £10 or £15 and hour, absolutely astonishing! Do you have contact details? (see copy of post on seloc below) On the way up to the north west yesterday there was a burning smell and then the heater packed in. At the time I just thought it was just guy fawkes celebration near to the the m6, but is this the dreaded resistor pack failure? No heater motor or air con now. How does my Lotus know how to do this just before winter? Had cold knees coming home. Anyone used the Heater fan resistor replacement package (Elise S2) from Elise Shop.com which solves the issue for good or have people just fitted a new resistor and done some drilling?
kid phunk Posted November 10, 2008 Author Posted November 10, 2008 A bloke called Ken - 07790807891. Its a proper garage setup but tell him to not expect the car back within a week (which was no problem for me). I expect Ken will charge a little more next time as the job was longer than he expected. Tell the guy to order the part himself as that will be quicker and easier. I ordered mine from JCT - £83....the whole job will probably cost him around £200......compared to probally £500 or so from a dealer
jimbo07g41 Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Cheers for the info. I have ordered the upgraded resistor pack and have just spent the last two hours sorting out my garage to make space to do the job myself. I need to get some fibreglass repairs to the front clam (numberplate ground out) and might get this done while its off the car. Hope you managed to get your car going and will let you know how I get on.
Captain Ahab Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 here is a link showing how to fix the resistor pack on an early S2 , no need to remove the clam - but it is very tight to get to the 2 retainer screws.. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.a...eater+%2Bmaplin
Gary ZBJ Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Top link, thanks, will make a note of that in case mine goes
jimbo07g41 Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Ok...I have just picked up the new resistor pack for the Lotus. I plan to do the job at the weekend and will take some pictures incase needed in the future. The part has not come with any instructions. Does anyone have the service notes on how to fit the upgraded pack?

Basicly you remove the existing die cast resistor pack and rivet a blanking plate over it. Then drill out the rivets on the large mounting plate and rivet in the new one with the resistors on it. Stick it all back in with the new adaptor harness. Honestly doing it is easy, the job is the clam really and even that is not difficult, just fiddlly.
jimbo07g41 Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Cheers Bertie, I found this on SELOC (see below). I have done lots of work on cars and motorbikes in the past. Just worried about the air con now and dont want to gas myself. There were no instructions in mine either. 1 Remove heater matrix 2 Drill out the 8 pop rivets & discard plate. 3 Pop rivet new resistor plate in position. 4 Remove heater motor 5 Remove old resistor pack 6 Screw blanking plate in position 7 Renew heater base plate. 8 Cut black wire on heater motor & crimp on male spade terminal 9 plug in new extension loom & refit heater motor & heater matrix My heater was never very good from new & I discovered that the sponge on the end of the heater motor had rolled & was partially blocking the hole in the plenum chamber. I solved this by putting a piece of card over the hole in the plenum chamber, refitting the heater motor & withdrawing the card & thus the sponge is where it is supposed to be & the heater is greatly improved. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO VIEW THE FITTING INSTRUCTIONS THEN PHONE LOTUS TECHNICAL & THE WILL EMAIL THEM TO YOU. 01953608247 Hope this helps.
kid phunk Posted November 14, 2008 Author Posted November 14, 2008 Yea, Lotus mailed me the instructions mate (5 mins after getting off the phone). If you have any problems let me know and I'll mail you them
jimbo07g41 Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 Clam is off and leaning up against the breakfast bar. Do have to drain down the air/con to do the resistor mod? If so how do you do it and is it dangerous (air con gas)?
jimbo07g41 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 After trying to get the blower out without removing the air con pipes gave up. To fit the updated resistor pack the heater matrix and blower has to come out. Needed to disconnect brake pipe and remove a few brackets. Fitted upgrades today and only special tool required was a rivet gun. All back in car and working.

I had to disconnect the heater water pipes but I never touched the brake pipes when I did mine.
