Acehole Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 You certainly do need some room to work.Don't know the part no. as we supply Lotus so I blagged it, but there is a kit with a new fan mounting plate with proper resistor on it.Now that's a different issue, yours must be an early car with the cable operated heater rather than the later servo one.Lube job I recall! Think it is defo a cable, I managed to sneak a couple of fingers behind the dash and could feel it, wouldn't want to just start sparying behind there though, although i dont think i could get behind it anyway, are you talking about spraying the back of the switch itself or futher down the cable ?
Jonathan E Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Think it is defo a cable, I managed to sneak a couple of fingers behind the dash and could feel it, wouldn't want to just start sparying behind there though, although i dont think i could get behind it anyway, are you talking about spraying the back of the switch itself or futher down the cable ? Cable operated jobs were S1, Lotus changed them on all but the earliest S2's. If yours is a cable jobbie you need to lubricate the cable ends that operate the flaps ie under the front clam where they connect to the heater unit, it helps if you can get someone to turn the knob back and forth while your apply some wd40. I think the cable operated went when a/c became an option on the S2. If on the other hand yours is an electric S2 job then it means that the heater housing has actually melted(I know this sounds ridiculous but it happened twice on my car) when it melts it deforms the flap housing and jams the flap in either the hot or cold position, there is also an actuator that operates the flap which I believe is made from very special Lotus putty, these also leave the flap in either the hot or cold position when they fail. All but the first cable and rod operated heaters will need to be removed for repair....clam off sadly. Or, do what I did when mine went for about the third time.......remove access panels, remove large heater trunking hose from top of the unit, reach down and force the flap over to the hot position, this should be done around the month of October, then when March comes around simply remove the trunking etc and force the flap to the cold position this will then be good until October etc etc etc. Sounds a bit pikey but if the heater unit has deformed your looking at around £400 for a dealer to do the job. Hth Regards Jon
Acehole Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 it is a cable connection, I will have a stab at lubing and moving to the hot position at the weekend, ta for the help.
nick_j007 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Hi people. I have had my '03 S2 for a couple of months now and the heater was not working from the time I bought it. Paul Matty sportscars Bromsgrove have given me a preliminary price of about £160 to sort it on the basis that it has no a/c and the clam will not need to be removed. HTH, Nick
kid phunk Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 well reading this Nick, I think the clam will be off mate! A guy here has just written his Lotus off so I'm hoping to pinch the resistor pack as his clam was smashed off :-)
kid phunk Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 £82.24 for the new resistor pack! (just part)
a7esk Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 What you need to do is take your nice car which looks like this.....Take about 4 hours, some spanners, allen keys and a few grazed knuckes and reduce it to this........wrestle the fan out of it and you'll find the resistor pack underneath soaking in water looking burned out and a bit like this......... Then simply re-build it! It's actualy not that hard, just a bit daunting lifting the clam off, needs 2 people for sure! Yes the same here you can buy the part from pat at kelsport or try Paul matty i gave them the info to one of there service guys at a show . When you replace it spray with paint laquer before fitting it. Eddie As for part i only paid £32 with VAT 15 months ago from Kelsport.
ross1215 Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 not sure if it's been mentioned but there is two types of resistor pack the original mounted below (£30) and the upgrade which sits above and removes the problem of it getting wet (£80) i've just got the upgrade pack and fitting it in a few weeks, for the sake of an extra £50 i'd get the upgraded one as you'll never have to fix it again. having said that is you do get the cheaper one make sure you dill some holes to let the water drain out. Also people say you can change it without the clam off but i can't see how your looking at 4-5 hours and two people as said before..
insanity Posted October 10, 2008 Posted October 10, 2008 As always people, if anybody is undertaking this... please take some photos and jot down what you did including any worrying moments! This sort of information is invaluable for our wiki and will help others... It looks like a common problem! Thanks baz
kid phunk Posted October 23, 2008 Author Posted October 23, 2008 This was the resistor pack. Upgraded with the new resistor pack and local garage did the job for £80 :-)

kid phunk Posted October 24, 2008 Author Posted October 24, 2008 Some fella called Ken in Killamarsh Sheffield. Took a week to look at it but hey! He also fixed my window and looked at the dropping coolant and charged nothing
bertie Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 This was the resistor pack. Upgraded with the new resistor pack and local garage did the job for £80 :-) That is incredible, the new resistor pack kit from Lotus in nearly that much. To fit it you have to take the fan out and drill out the rivets and replace the fan mounting plate with the new one with the resistors on it. To get the fan out you have to take the clam off, etc etc..... They can't have replaced the resistor pack on the blower motor for £80, it's just not possible.

Agree - when I went to pick up my 111R two weekends ago the heater blower was dead. The car was taken to Horseless Carrige in Harrogate I believe it was, and at the garage's expense they had the heater blower and resistor pack replaced - clam off. I got the car back 24 hours later and the bill I was shown was around GBP800 !

I bought the resistor pack, that was about £83. The bloke at the garage just charged me £80 to fit it. It got the old mangled one back aswell. The bloke is just cheap, I had to wait a week for him to even look at it
