I can do it all on line so won't have to wait for paperwork to arrive, but just checking to see if they will allow this. Could save me over £200 if I can.........

I think it takes a couple of weeks to show on the dvla records as sorn. Depending how long you are talking it may not be worth sorning it. If you read the back of your tax reminder, it says you wont be committing an offence as long as you sorn or re-tax within 14 days of your current tax disk expiring so dont know if that helps you any.

I've found out that the barge fits into K band (under the pre-2006 criteria), rather than what I thought which was M band (its a 300g CO2, eats-puppies-for-breakfast, monster). That was going to be a £210 difference, but now I've found out it's K so it's not worth SORNing and then retaxing. Cheers folks.

You can declare a vehicle sorn and retax it straight away - if you wish. We regularly sorn cars and then after a week or so retax them if for example we have a second lease taken out. You just need the original v5c to do it.

Cheers folks. 300g co2, bloody hell, I thought mine was bad at 289 Thankfully mine is pre march 06 too.

(Mind you I haven't looked so far down the alphabet as band M!) I SORNed my Elise for Jan and Feb as I knew it wasn't going to be driven so it was nice getting just a little cheque back from the DVLA. New MOT on Saturday, then Tax, then service -still not sure where yet- and then Can't wait to have a blast down to Norfolk on 21st. -- Keith

The Audi A8 is a 3.7 V8, so re-taxing it a month early would have avoided the (~£250) increase in April, but you can't re-tax in Feb when the tax is due from 1st April, so we'd have needed to SORN it in Feb, and re-tax from 1st March (12 months at current rate rather than the new rate). The refund on the full month of March wasn't the concern. Now it looks like the car is old enough to not be subject to the (big) increase, the problem's gone away. Ta all !

Mind you, that needed nearly as many top ups of oil as it did petrol! Damn good noise though.
