surrealillusions Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 But did you fly all the way to New York to see them at Jones Beach as they were never going to tour outside the US again? Only to find they came to the UK 2 years after Prefer the early Rush stuff though, later stuff is a bit samey I didnt fly out to american to see them..i was just getting into them a few months before they came to the uk. I like all of it really..although the earlier stuff is more what Rush should sound like rather than the later stuff. And Martin R reminded of 2 other bands i would of wanted to see live, and thats Pink Floyd and Genesis...how can i forget those 2?
Neil Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 In no particular order, and with no apologies or excuses (although some of these were attended for a significant other). Some of these were at festivals. OK, so that's 2 excuses. Foo Fighters @Wembley Oasis Manic Street Preachers Happy Mondays Black Grape Super Furry Animals Stereophonics Supergrass (we stopped them mid set at V99 by making a human pyramid!) Massive Attack Travis Kylie Justin Trousersnake Eminem Xibit 50 Cent Cypress Hill Faithless Chemical Brothers Groove Armada Lost Prophets Damian Rice Pussycat Dolls Black Eyed Peas Madonna Razorlight Metallica Spinal Tap Paolo Nutini Kasabian Red Hot Chili Peppers Bloc Party Beastie Boys Corrine Bailey Rae Duran Duran Keane Fatboy Slim Goldie Lookin' Chain Joss Stone Placebo Cast Levellers Gomez Cardigans Eagle Eye Cherry Death In Vegas Suede Beautiful South James Brown Paul Oakenfold@Cream (while he was a resident there)(OK, not a live band, but bloody good!) Foo's were easily the best, 50 Cent was the worst, although the amount of + Shaun Ryder consumed before he went on stage ruined the Black Grape set. There's probably a few more no-names from various Radio1 roadshows in my youth and a few more I've forgotten, but not a bad list. A bit more "yoof" and a bit less "golden oldie" than a few of you, but I was a child of the 80's (well, born '79)
Dredd123 Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 The Jam The Pogues It Bites Bryan Adams (x6) Foo Fighters (x4) The Who Slash's Snakepit Velvet Revolver Iron Maiden AC/DC Shania Twain (x3) Keith Urban (x3) Ash The Darkness Paul Weller (x2) Jools Holland (x4) Various support bands Don't think I could pick a favourite as such but Slash's Snakepit at the Underworld in Camden was pretty special - only about 200 in the crowd. I would have liked to have seen The Stone Roses, and at some point would like to see Metallica, Neil Young, and so many others.........
Fiona Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Good stuff Fiona - you obviously have great taste in music (and Honda converted cars) I forgotten I'd seen Thunder, also seen Gun and Kings X. Others too but can't remember them at the minute. I saw Hardline support Extreme so probably on the same tour many moons ago. Saw them at the Sheffield Arena. Did you ever see Mike Tramp when he went on to Freak of Nature after White lion? White Lion are touring again but without the original guitar player (Vito Bratta) it's not the same. Mind you AIC did Download the other year with a new lead singer! Skinny black guy with a cool afro, hardly a replacement for Layne though. One band I wished I'd seen was Tesla. They are touring again now though so maybe.......trouble is I'd just feel old and my waist length hair went a number of years back I saw Freak of Nature in a tiny hotel in East Kilbride and I've seem Mike tramp twice since then at Rock City in Nottingham (I think I even dragged Steve to one of them). Not too keen on the new WL stuff but I'm sure he'll be over to tour soon enough. I can still remember hearing about Layne's death. Much bigger thing to me that Kurt Cobain. Same with Shannon Hoon in Blind Melon - I was gutted. I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant so my concert days are over for the time being. Ryan Adams is over in 6 weeks or so and I'd love to go and see him again. Not this time, though.
Steve J Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant so my concert days are over for the time being. Ryan Adams is over in 6 weeks or so and I'd love to go and see him again. Not this time, though. You can go see him Fi. Me, I'd rather stay at home and listen to the baby crying
Dr H Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 I saw Freak of Nature in a tiny hotel in East Kilbride I can still remember hearing about Layne's death. Much bigger thing to me that Kurt Cobain. Same with Shannon Hoon in Blind Melon - I was gutted. I saw Freak of Nature in a small place in Stoke. Quite liked the first album. Wihite Lion are touring and were over in the UK a couple of months back. IIRC Layne Staley was dead for two weeks before anyone found him? Bad shit heroine. Blind Melon are cool too. Didn't he did of a drugs OD on the tour bus? Drugs and Rock n Roll huh A friend of ours went to see Ramstien in concert when she was heavily pregnant - not 38 weeks though!
DunkHSP Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 good too see alot of 'proper' bands being mentioned, and also good to see not too much mention of U2!! been to see loads over the years but a few standouts are: Monster Magnet (charlotte, leicester) Shellac (leeds & sheffield) Sonic Youth (rock city) Hot Snakes (rescue room, notts) Descendents (reading then the day after in london) Unsane supported by Mule (charlotte again) A big highlight of recent years was going to Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly festival in Vegas (duh). 4 days of top music and awesome cars. Couple of great bands, a girl called Gizzelle (or Lil' Gizzelle) and also Miss Mary Anne. So good I'm off back again next year!! God this has got me going back though all the old gigs... OK what about your first gig, what was that? Mine was a UK hardcore band called Suncarriage and I think I was about 15 or 16 and it was at The Princess Charlotte (as it was in those days!!) in Leicester!!
Dredd123 Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 My first gig was The Jam at the Queens Hall in Leeds - 1981 (me age 12). Can remember hanging about afterwards waiting for them to come out and my mate got his programme signed. I still have the ticket somewhere..... >>OK what about your first gig, what was that?
Deleted_User Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Mainly 80's & 90's for me Level 42 Dire Straits Paul McCartney Oasis Ocean Colour Scene Hayseed Dixie < AWESOME Can't think of any more Also, this guy... anyone recognise him? (not the chubby guy in the white t-shirt that's me)
JonS Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 John Denver (several times - as a kid when I had no choice ) The Shadows x2 Hank Marvin on his own x2 Garbage The Darkness (worst gig ever!!!!) Ash (support to Darkness and absolutely rocked - wanted to see them for a long time before - awesome!) Tenacious D - absolutely brilliant and hillarious at the same time - Jack Black Rock God Bon Jovi x 5 Snow Patrol Stereophonics Feeder Hell Is For Heroes Semisonic x2 (awesome band but not together anymore :'() Editors x2 (Brilliant - saw them before they were famous) Rooster Girls Aloud - well, not really! Only because they were headlining my University Prom - and we actually were out on the amusement rides when they were on as everyone was inside watching them mime really badly Nickleback Matchbox 20 Top Loader The Naked Apes Cherry Falls There's prob a few I've missed, but that is the last few years worth
Greg.g Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Looks like Howard Jones to me...... I forgot i saw him as well back in the eighties.
