I have a set of Aces Shift Lights (Change Up & Down) which are the same lights that are fitted to the Caterham R300, R400 and race cars. They are fully adustable and you can set them up to suit your own style of driving.

You can set the change down light to what ever you want (Green Light on the left)

You can set the change up lights maximum limit to where ever you want.

You can set the count up lights to the change up lights to what ever spaceing you want.

You can adjust the brightness of the LED lights

You can also set different profiles for night and day driving.

Now the down side is there is not enough power in the stack dash to take rev readings from, so you will have to send those wires back through the car to the engine bay area.

Nick Whales fitted mine and had problems due to the lack of power in the stack dash. They managed to sort everything out in the end with the help of Aces Tech Support. I must say that Nick Whales also did a very tidy instalation as well for me. Make sure that you remind Ian that he fitted them to my car so he knows the issues they had at the time.

Here is the website for the Aces: http://www.aceserve.co.uk/

here are a couple of pics as well.

hope that helps.

sorry for being a bit thick on this, but whats the point of these other than nmaking your dash loolk a bit untidy?

does it change your driving style, does it indicate the optimum time to change gear, or just that you should??

are they of any practical use for roasd driving or just a track addon?

sorry this sounds a bit negative,im not i just dont understand the benefit,

but im sure someone will enlighten me at which point i;ll get me coat. lol

I understand the requirement, but they don't exactly look nice perched on top of the stack do they? I know they obviously need to be in the line of sight, but surely they could have found somewhere better - on top of the steering cowl for example...

I agree too, they look like an awful add-on. Unless it's a dedicated track day slag (or used a lot on track) a waste of time in my opinion.

I have bought the DRE shift lights as posted above. They fit nicely under the cowel between the rev counter and speedo.

I'll let you know how they perform when I get the car back.

Usefull for trackdays and those of us who's engines rev off the rev counter scale :P

The point of shift lights is to get the best out of the cars performance and gearing.

When the Aces was fitted to the Caterham Superlight race cars it was worth almost 2 seconds on a lap. (I can't remember which circuit they tested it out on)The shift lights indicate the optimum time to change gear just before the rev limiter. or a point of your choice.

Also when on bends that you don't want to un-stabilize the car by gear changes. It allows you to judge the amount of throttle you apply in relation to the corner. This prevents un-stabilize the cars grip due to gear change or hitting the rev limiter. Ether of these actions can un-stabilize the car due to the front to back rocking motion they inflict. On a bend this could send you off the track side ways if a wheel starts to brake traction. This is one of the most common reasons a car comes off the circuit.

On the Aces you can adjust the spacing between the different lights coming on. I have mine at 200prm intervals (Five lights then flashes like mad = 1200rpm. The lights are set flash about 200 rpm before the rev limiter to allow for the gear change). My setting was set up and advise by someone who races Caterhams.

The down shift light can be adjusted to the point that you start to drop out of the power band. This helps keep the car on the boil. very helpfull of 111r versions of the Elise/Exige with the second cam and earlier power band.

The reason that they should be in the line of sight is so that they are clearly seen. If you look on the F1 cars you will see them built in to the top of the steering wheel, which is in the drivers direct line of sight. The idea being that while you are looking into, through and around the corner and worrying where other cars are it is one less thing to need to be concerned about. They are bright enough to give to the info you need for pacing the car on the bend and getting max power for the exit.

Yes it did change my driving style when I had the Caterham on the race track.

Are they of any practical use for road driving? Yes & No to be honest.

Around town? NO not really

Winding B Road? Yes can be

Swiss mountain passes? Yes Yes Yes

Trackday? Yes Yes Yes

Racing? Yes Yes Yes

You could say that if you know your car then you would not need them. In some ways I would agree. But every F1 driver will have them and I bet they know there cars far better than I will ever know mine. Every Caterham race car I see normally has them as well.

I understand the requirement, but they don't exactly look nice perched on top of the stack do they? I know they obviously need to be in the line of sight, but surely they could have found somewhere better - on top of the steering cowl for example...

It was where I asked them to be fitted and to be honest they look fine. I have had a couple of people say that when they have seen the pictures of my cars profile on MLOC, that like you they was not to sure, but when they see it for real it looks fine. Nick Whales have done a very tidy job of the installation IMHO.

As many of you know I am very pedantic about my car and if I didn't like them I would of had them removed. Most of the time if the light are not coming on I don't even notice that they are there.Placing them on top of the steering cowl would have blocked out the warning lights.

At the end of the day if you like them get them, If you don't save your money.

But if you are thinking of getting a set and want to have a ride in my Exige to see what you think of them before parting with money. It would be easier to explain when you can see them in action... drop me a u2u.

Hope that helps

P.S Hopefully someone who has been for a ride in my car will be along and can comment on how discreet they are..

Funny you should say that - I do have the HUD from a Harrier GR7 that I could use :D

and I have the throttle and control column to match! Now that would be a mod, all I need to do know is find a spare Pegasus engine and I'm off  . No need for shift lights then, just 20,000+lbs of thrust to play with.

We'd have you in the corners though...

Did I forget to mention I'd also fit the missiles, rockets and cannons? :D
