How To Tell The Between A 111 And A Elise

I hate to disagree but here goes :D This is how i see it.

S1 Elise

111 Standard Elise approx 120 BHP ( none VVC )

111s Approx 140 BHP VVC stands for variable valve control

111 160 sport ( approx 150 BHP ) None VVC, ported head different manifold etc etc.

111 sport 190 VHPD engine ( very high power derivative ) Different bottom end etc etc.

....

This contradicts Steve J.... Steve puts the 111 as the VVC (as well as the 111s)....

I thought 111 was just a Lotus model number like X150 is for the Jag XK.

I've certainly never heard anybody say "I have an Elise 111" and I've never seen the Elise 111 mentioned anywhere.

Matt, 111 is the Elise model number. Put it this way ive never seen an Elise with a VVC engine that is not a 111s.

don't think I will bother with the car now, its for sale as a S2 111 with out leather. To be honest if I did buy and then come to sell and it is infact a 111 then I am going to run into trouble selling as one as there are doubts if it even exists or not.

It seems we all agree that

For S1, there is only the 111S powered by a VVC

For S2 Rover, the elise that are powered by VVC are the S2 111 and S2 111S

Would help if dannygt4smith could precise if he asking for S1 or S2 type....

On Series 1 cars I completely agree with MartinR - 111 was the Lotus code for the Elise (118bhp) but was only ever badged an Elise, similar to how the VX220 has a Lotus code, as do the 90's Elans, and so did the Lotus Carlton but you don't hear much about the Lotus designation unless you search.

The 111s came out with the VVC model and promoted the 111 model number, but was only ever badged a 111s - i.e. you couldn't buy as S1 '111' with a VVC, as it was by definition a 111s.

Then came 135, S160, S160 Sport, 190, S2 111s, 135, 111r, 111, Exige, Exige S, Exige R plus all the limited editions etc etc just to make everything unfathomable.

It appears im right on S1,s and Steve is correct on S2,s. Sounds about right as we have owned them sort of Elise :D I must admit i did not realise they did a S2 with the VVC engine that was not a 111s.

Aha! I was thinking S1 only.... thats why there has been the confusion! All clear...

There WAS a 111 as well as 111s in the S2 line up.

111 is often missed in reviews as so few were sold. Most folks after a premium Elise also went for the comfort bits (carpet, seat padding). Andrew Walsh has a 111 with the VVC but wasn't interested in the other stuff.

And stop mentioning S1's on this thread as it will only confuse things!

If you've found a 111, it should be good value as 2nd hand, most people will STILL want the comfort bits.
