S1: Normal Running Temperature?

Big Rides

Had my S1 for 2.5 years.

Up until a week or two ago, it always ran at a constant 84 on the digital temp guage.

For the last couple of weeks it now seems to run at 87/88.

I know it's only a couple of degrees difference, but I find it strange after being so constant, for so long.

Coolant and oil levels look fine.

Is this anything to worry about? Early signs of anything to worry about?

Your comments and input most appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ian

I would keep an eye on it but not worry about it. Does it change much by turning the fans on and off?

i was under the impression that 'normal' running temp for an S1 was 87

mine was always ran at that until i had a new rad fitted, since then it varies around the mid to late 80's untill i turn the interior de mister/ fan on then it always shows a rise in temp for some reason, dont knw why though!?!!?! :crybaby:

It changes by 1 (or 2 degress at most) between on and off.

when i turn the heater on mine goes up slightly, into the 90's :crybaby:

its been doing it since the last 3 yrs and all running fine, so didnt do anything about it, other than never use the place that did the job! people on here knw who.

theres only three places for lotus in and around bham and it dont take much to guess who, if you read some of my previous posts.

not saying they are crap, just personal choice/preference thats all.

Mine normally runs about 84, it drops to 82 if you drive a bit quicker. More airflow over the rad i presume. It goes up to 89 ish if you are waiting at traffic lights etc.

I normally have mine running @ 84 degrees and 88-90 in traffic...Since having my collant done etc. Im running hotter 87 degrees on a run unless I floor it and 90-91 in traffic, I figured its ok...

They wouldn't have any character otherwise right?! :D

Same... on country roads... 84ºc... speed=more fresh air through the system... in town it usually at 87.... and at 5.00 6.00PM.... 90 as I don't move.... I had a 92 last week.... but fan start up.... I also noticed the heater on give 1-2 extra degrees.....

I heard the only way to keep it below 87ish is to add a thermostat remote...and an extra fan you can turn on whenever you wish...

Miner runs around 88. But goes up to 92ish in traffic. Gonna change the stat anyway i think never herd my fans come on. Been meening to check them for ages now.

Mine usually runs at around 84 but over the past couple of weeks it seems to be getting up to 78, 79 and going no further. Thats on a run at motorway speed though - ive not been sat in traffic. Is this normal or may I have some sort of problem?

Nope - I've got an 82deg remote stat and the temp can still rise to over 100deg after a run then sitting in stationary traffic.

At the end of the day, a digital gauge means you notice 1-2deg change from the norm. On a car with a needle gauge, you wouldn't notice such a small change. Only worry about it if there's a sudden, significant change from what yours normally runs at.

An extra fan can be added, but why ? The ECU is more than capable of protecting the engine unless you're a track hound using it in the height of summer. The ECU should turn on the fan at around 100deg and turn it off again when it goes below 95. If it keeps rising above 100 with the fan running, the display will start to flash when things become serious. At this point you should stop the engine and let it cool ! It's all in the manual...

Sooty - was it properly bled when the new rad was fitted ? It might still have some air in the system. The new rad might result in slightly lower temperatures as it could be more efficient (and the temp is measured in the return from the rad, I think).
