Fiona Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Yes, I do own an Exige. And very nice it is too. Attaching the roof on the S2 is miles better than the S1. Takes you about 30 seconds to put on compared to 5 minutes on the S1. Which one is quicker round the track? How long is a piece of string? The car with the better driver, tyres, suspension, etc will be quicker. You'll find loads of info, including this useful comparison on Elises.co.uk It may be worth you looking for a well sorted S1 or early S2 that has been lovingly upgraded. It's much cheaper to buy the car with the upgrades included that doing so yourself. The Sport 160 and the Exige are more "extreme" than the other variants of the Elise. Service intervals are at 6000 miles and can typically cost a bit more to maintain as their engines (esp. the Exige) is highly strung. Again, drive each to get an idea but I think you'd be very happy with a S1 111S as it would meet your needs. I went from a standard S2 to an S1 Exige and I have lost the ability to take the car out any day, rain or shine. This is mainly due to the fact that I can't get the Exige down the ramps of my car park at work but it's also not as "fun" in the torrential rain on semi-slicks. Never used to bat an eyelid at the rain in the Elise.
Snapper Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Boot Space for Camping and an Elise I would say the Series 2 Elise 111s would be the best all around car for you. (But you need to work out if you prefer the S1 instead) Plenty for sale on Piston Heads and Auto Trader in your range
rustyveedub Posted August 29, 2006 Author Posted August 29, 2006 Thanks for the replies. I have just been looking at S2's and there are some 135 sports tourers in my price range. Im even more confused now. I will have to go to the plan i was trying to avoid and look at loads of Elise's. I have been looking in the back of Evo magazine (i don't know how accurate it is) and it states the weights for S1 = 731kg S2 = 726kg Boot Space for Camping and an Elise I used to go for 3 weeks rough camping with a rucksack. So the boot on an Elise would be way big enough, but the bigger the better Yes, I do own an Exige. And very nice it is too. Wow a babe with an Exige
Martin R Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 I think Steve J might have something to say about the babe with the Exige
Joff135 Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Don't forget to consider a S1 135 Sport! It's a great car with a close ratio gearbox as standard and it performs well throughout the rev range rather than at higher revs as with the 111s and 160 models. The 160 is a lovely car but runs a bit lumpy...but then some people like that!
Martin R Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 S1 weights early cars 725 KG Standard later cars 755 KG 111S 770 KG Sport 190 670 KG S2 Weights Elise S 860 KG ( no options ) Elise 111S 806 KG ( unladened ) Elise 111R 860KG ( no options ) HTH.
rustyveedub Posted August 29, 2006 Author Posted August 29, 2006 I think Steve J might have something to say about the babe with the Exige I thought somebody would I am only passing on my obersvations
rustyveedub Posted August 29, 2006 Author Posted August 29, 2006 S1 weightsearly cars 725 KG Standard later cars 755 KG 111S 770 KG Sport 190 670 KG S2 Weights Elise S 860 KG ( no options ) Elise 111S 806 KG ( unladened ) Elise 111R 860KG ( no options ) HTH. They are about right with what is in the magazine. They only list 2 S1's the other being the sport 160 at 740kg. Do you know what the S2 with the k-series engine weighs?
Martin R Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 I cant find that weight. On the S1 the difference between the ordinary K series and the 111s which is a K series with the VVC mechanism is 15 KG. So if you deduct the 15 KG from the S2 111s it works out at 790 KG. I dont expect that would be far out.
PeterField Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Ben, if you decide an S1 sport 160's the car for you, I can vouch for the black one you found on Pheads. The guy who owns it (Alex on here) lives round the corner from me and it's a very, very nice example. Well worth you taking a look at it IMHO.
rustyveedub Posted August 30, 2006 Author Posted August 30, 2006 I have now seen this S2 135 Sports tourer on Autotrader
Joff135 Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 You've got to get down your local dealers and try a couple of cars out...you will know which model you prefer straight away! Imho if i were to buy a S2 i would get a Toyota engine model only...whereas with the S1 there are no probs as they are all...if standard cars...K series. I think that the new Toyota engines are knocking the S2 K series model prices for six...and wait for a couple of years time when there are even more even more reasonably priced Toyota versions for sale!
rustyveedub Posted August 30, 2006 Author Posted August 30, 2006 You've got to get down your local dealers and try a couple of cars out...you will know which model you prefer straight away! Okay i have been to see this car today Autotrader as it was the closest one to me at a dealer. Couldn't take it out as it was at the back of the showroom. Probably go back tomorrow and take it out. Oh the boot did seem a lot smaller than a S2. Is a sport 160 really worth the (approximate) 5k premium over a standard S1?
Mr_Belowski Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 5k premium? If the 160 is a good example and the 5k cheaper standard car is a bit of a shambles, then maybe. But when I'm browsing the classifieds day dreaming of another Elise there's usually no more than 3k difference. 11k for for a bog standard S1 is a bit steep. And it's a bit weird that he's got it in the back of the show room where he can't get it out (oo-er). Probably going to spend the evening charging the battery and pumping up the tyres
chorton_1 Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 I cant find that weight. I dont expect that would be far out. Presumably the 15kg also includes the rear spoiler, headlamp covers, wider rear wheels and tyres plus any other differences that may not be on the S2 variant though. The only thing not mentioned yet is that you may find an S1 with a boot rack that extends the amount of stuff you can take. Probably not important but may be a consideration.
