Greg.g Posted August 30, 2006 Posted August 30, 2006 If you want the car mainly as a weekend plaything and for camping trips, then i would suggest the S1. As a good all rounder look for a S1 111s and you will find them well within your bugget. Better still, buy an S1 111s and then upgrade the suspension to nitrons or ohlins. This would certainly improve the car for track days and enthusiastic driving without running the higher stressed engine of the S160. There just happens to be a group buy for ohlins adjustable suspension on here at the moment Good luck with the hunting. Greg
rustyveedub Posted August 30, 2006 Author Posted August 30, 2006 5k premium? If the 160 is a good example and the 5k cheaper standard car is a bit of a shambles, then maybe. But when I'm browsing the classifieds day dreaming of another Elise there's usually no more than 3k difference. 11k for for a bog standard S1 is a bit steep. And it's a bit weird that he's got it in the back of the show room where he can't get it out (oo-er). Probably going to spend the evening charging the battery and pumping up the tyres I did say approximately If i was to buy a standard S1 then it would probably be a cheap one. And if it was to be a 160 then i would spend the money and get a good one. Anyway is the 160 worth the extra 3-5k? I knew it was overpriced, it was just the nearest one to me at a dealer. He did say it was 2k cheaper than any of the others on Pistonheads (I must look young and naive) i asked him to start it, but of course the battery was flat so he had to jump it. When i visited Paul Matty sportcars they told me to avoid the S1 111s as they had complicated heads which were getting old and starting to cause trouble

When i was looking for an elise 2 years ago, Paul Matty told me that the S1 111s would be their choice I have not heard of many problems with the 111s heads. If your not busy on sunday, why not pop up to the sprint meeting at Curborough near lichfield. I am sure you may find one or two owners who would give you some pointers and possibly take you for a spin.
Scott_Mac Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 Sport 135 is a cracking car, and i've practically made my own.... for an occasional car, the 135 or Sport 160 are the ones to go for. Boot space for cammping is fine, i've done a week with me, the other half, the tent etc etc and that's in an S1. Of all the ones you've mentioned so far, the black S160 looks great, it's clearly been to Horizon so possibly worth asking Mike his thoughts on it... The advice that is always given, often ignored, is to buy the modified car now, as you'll always do it yourself, so get the induction kit, the exhaust, the suspension etc and save yourself a fortune in the future... i've spent over £7k on my car since buying it, a lot on repairs/fixing broken things but equally a lot on upgrades. If you want to come and have a mooch round my car and i'll take you out for a spin ina noisy beast you're more than welcome.... Also have a look at: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/90588.htm - 111S is not my favourite car, but it's certainly a good one! http://forums.seloc.org/classified.php?action=ad&id=2244 - looks a bargain, S1 135 as i said is my fave car and that is a good price for it.

malbon Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 Sums it up nicely Jon. I have heard it is a complicated head but ive only ever heard of ONE VVC mech. go bang and that was Beefys. Its the same old same old advice really. Already modified one - Try and get one done but keep in mind the 111s puts out 145 standard so no good getting a modded 118-145 one. 111s - Get 150bhp and CR box. THe best road elise 135 - Equally good car but limited colour choice 160 - Good track car. A bit of a pain for the road as like the Exige. 160 with a CR box and driveability kit gets my nod in the current market. I'd pay no more than 13 though and would want one with Nitrons and a few extra bits if possible.
Joff135 Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 I would still buy a 135 Sport if i ever bought an Elise again...i know that it only comes in one colour but i really like the ltd edition metallic light bluey silver...i love it and everyone who i know who has seen my car loves the colour too...especially with the black/red Corbeau sport seats, red 4 point harnesses and the black/red leather QR Momo steering wheel. Looks cracking...i may even keep it...see my add in the For Sale section!
Scott_Mac Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 I don't like the 111S power delivery either, much preferring the 135/160... It's deffo the one for me, Joff - good as yours is, the link i posted above has the same car (condition/mileage may be different) but it's a hell of a lot cheaper!
rustyveedub Posted August 31, 2006 Author Posted August 31, 2006 Looks cracking...i may even keep it...see my add in the For Sale section! Thanks but the black 160 for 13k seems like a lot better deal. Can somebody describe the way the power is delivered with the standard S1, 135, 111s and 160? Is the 160 the highest revving engine? Does the 160 have the VVC head? What is the driveability kit?
malbon Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 Its all personal. And Joff...please price your car correctly The problem with the 15k S1's - I've seen a few - mainly 160's - is that the 135R (arguably the 160's successor) is so closely priced. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/71515.htm I've driven them both extensively and the S2 is a lot better put together car. I was always against the S2 having driven the std and 111s but the 135R FEELS like an S1 - light and agile I'd personally go for one of these (inc. current yota elises/exiges) when I go for another.
Scott_Mac Posted August 31, 2006 Posted August 31, 2006 135 and 160 have the same head, it is a conventional style and not the VVC mechanism (VVC is variable valve control) The 111S is very linear, has good torque and revs quite highly, but it never felt as exciting with big surges anywhere (may have been a bad example i don't know) the S135 has good low down torque and screams quite happily to 7k (though 6.5k is probably best place to change up) 160 is manic... lumpy idle, gutless below 2.5k but goes mental at 5.5k 160 is probably a bit daft as an everyday car as it can get tiresome - but it's a very exciting car to drive... you could always get a Sport 135, fit a 4-2-1 manifold and then change the cams, will give you similar/more power to a 160 and be better throughout... I've added 4 cars, std, 111s, 135 and 160 on the following graph - hopefully it works... http://www.dyno-plot.co.uk/dyno/dynoplot/i...elise/index.htm You should be able to see that the 135 is a great variant.. more torque throughout, only losing out to the 111S (and that one seems to read very well) at the very top end... 160 has worse torque but carries on going in the rev range. 135R - the only S2 i'd own - period :tup

You just have to drive them. Despite what Scott says there is absolutely NOTHING between the models. They deliver differently but point to point and yes some feel quicker - 118 feels quick early and mid but trails off towards the red line. 111s always feels on the money whatever the rev point and it revs stronger to the red line- 160 feels bogged down but peakier up top and the 135 seems to be like an improved 118 but on road and on track - you are talking a knats bollock. Saying that having had the 111s I could no way own a 118 std. You do get used to the power and yearn for more - which is the bad point about the 111s. Hell, just get a Honda d one. There is one on pistonheads thats been there for ages. Im sure he d take an offer
