Hello all,

Just enquiring if any one has the 2 VVC exhaust cams on a standard 1.8 S1.

Im looking at doing this DIY and wondering if its worthwhile.

Looking for a bit more power on a budget.

I've heard of it being done. I have one if you can find another.

You might want Verier pulleys as well to make the most of it (although I don't know for sure). I also have a pair of these (Piper).

If you are handy with the spanners you could buy a complete vvc engine to put in, and then sell yours. Probably the cheapest way to get an extra 40 bhp. Who was it on here that did it just before Christmes? Ollie? A clever youth half my age, anyway. Very impressive job he did, for very little wonga.

I am confused, there are three cams in a VVC. The two inlet cams are synched by the mechs, HCU and a solid bar. People have put a vvc exhaust cam in a standard engine but you would need a VVC head to use all three cams. If you use a VVC head you cant use verniers, sorry. Well you could use one on the exhaust.

I think he wants to fit these to a standard head, not a VVC head. If so, you can swap two standard cams for two VVC exhaust cams, which have a better profile.

On a VVC head it's only the inlet cams that are different. The VVC exhaust cam has the same bearing size as the standard cams and you can therefore fit two VVC exhaust cams in a standard head. The exhaust cams from a VVC do give a power increase when fitted to the inlet on a standard head.

You can also fit verniers as the pulley end is the same (I think).

It's commonly done in the MG world.

Yeap dobbo knows what I mean, 2 VVC exhaust cams in replacement for the standard exhaust and inlet cam.

A whole engine transplant is a ton more work and more expensive than just swapping out a couple of cams, believe me it has been considered but after looking into the wiring loom and ecu etc. I went off the idea.

hi mate, i`d definately have a look at the engine change route.

very very rewarding, best thing ive done and as said above, was really not that expensive when you think of the cost of cams etc.

This is my Cam ladder upside down. The exhaust cam is on the left and the two inlets on the right of the picture.

The standard engine has an exhaust cam and an inlet cam.

The VVC has one exhaust cam and two seperate inlet cams, that are timed up by the ECU, Hydraulic Plunger and the VVC mechs, that sit on the end of the inlets.

You can take the VVC exhaust cam and pop it in a standard car but not the inlets. You could use a VVC cam and another inlet cam, but this would be a single inlet cam.

Jamie, he wants to put 2 x vvc exhaust cams into a standard head. IE using one vvc exhaust cam as an inlet cam on a standard head and one as an exhaust cam. You could do it but i have no idea of the profile, lift, duration of a vvc exhaust cam? I also no idea if it will give you any gains. I also cant see the point instead of just buying uprated standard cams? Unless you happen to have a pair of VVC exhaust cams already.

Apologies to DObbo and the OP.
