JonS Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 I need to replace my throttle body as the cable arm is wobbling. I've only had it about 4 years, but still. I have the 52mm currently fitted and went from the plastic 48mm one. I know a few people prefer the 48 over the 52. DVA recommende I just get another 52, but I was wondering what people's opinions were of the two different sizes? Ta.
KurtB Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 When I had mine I noted no discernible difference apart from it seemed slightly freer revving on the higher part of the rev range. This was with a 52mm body on a vvc car.
TheRon Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 The 52mm throttle body makes the throttle more sensitive to pedal movements mainly at the start of the pedal travel. I found that going back to a 48mm throttle body after a couple of years on the 52mm gave me more control over smaller throttle movements and I wouldn't go back to the 52mm now. Incidentally I have a spare alloy 48mm throttle body, yours if you cover the postage.
JonS Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 Thanks Tim, I think I remember chatting to you about it at Goodwood last year some time. Would certainly be interesting to give it a try if that is ok? Will PM you...
JonS Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 Thanks Tim On this subject - doesn't the 52mm allow greater performance across the rev range or is the difference discernible? Is it a case of the plastic 48mm TB sticks so you're better off changing it, and you might as well change it for the alloy 52mm? Is there actually a performance gain from the 52 or does it just let more air in sooner?
John FISH Curtis Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 No noticable BHP gains over a 48mm. The alloy TB's do not suffer from sticking, the plastic bodies do,
JonS Posted May 28, 2012 Author Posted May 28, 2012 So, thanks to Tim I now have a 48 alloy TB to try out - just need to find the time to fit it without the mrs realising!
John FISH Curtis Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Take 15mins to fit. Don't forget to reset the TPS before starting
JonS Posted May 29, 2012 Author Posted May 29, 2012 Thanks for the reminder John. Presumably the tps is just an electrics thing and not anything to do with the engine setup.
fentuz Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 as your engine is modded, you may need to alter the idle stop screw on the TB. If it closes too quick, the engine may cut off even RPM dropped quickly (typical example: approaching round about).
KingK_series Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I need to replace my throttle body as the cable arm is wobbling. I've only had it about 4 years, but still. DVA recommende I just get another 52, but I was wondering what people's opinions were of the two different sizes? Ta. Here is a graph of plastic 48mm [blue] vs ally 48[pink] vs ally 52[red] with 633 cams that someone did, and although this was not my work the result is as expected - note the pink and red overly each other. I'd use a 48 and mod it by radius'ing the entrance and removing the wedge and soldering the bolt holes. The 52mm throttle body makes the throttle more sensitive to pedal movements mainly at the start of the pedal travel. I found that going back to a 48mm throttle body after a couple of years on the 52mm gave me more control over smaller throttle movements and I wouldn't go back to the 52mm now. Incidentally I have a spare alloy 48mm throttle body, yours if you cover the postage. - the 52 has a much crisper [faster] throttle response - it's designed for people who want to go faster, and who are hopefully better drivers. the 48 has an ally wedge on the butterfly which slows the throttle response and makes the shopping trolly 1.4's and 1.6's easier for nannies and old ladies to drive without hitting things in the sainsbury's supermarket car park.
jhall89 Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 I have a 48mm alloy throttle body and all needs to be done is remove the wedge and solder up the holes to get snappy throttle response without £s of new 52mm. DVA was quite happy with this when he breathed on my motor!
