andywolf Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Hi All I have started to have an issue with the temperature sensor. I do appreciate that it is bloody cold at the moment but yesterday whilst driving at about 80mph on a dual carridge way the temp reading went from 90-70 in a few seconds, then went off. It has not been shown any temperature since. I have even sat in the car for a few minutes reving the engine and even then nothing. Does anyone know if it is the sensor? Where is it and how easy to fix? many Thanks Andy

The blue temperature sender is notoriously unreliable and often fails, resulting in temperature readings approx 10°C lower than reality. The blue sender is also a "single wire" type which is affected by electrical load. In most cases, a 1°C rise in temperature can be seen when turning on each item of electrical equipment, e.g. headlights, heater fan, windscreen wipers. The S2 (Rover engine) has a single (black) temperature sender for both ECU and dash. First thing to do would be check the BLUE sensor is connected.
dobbo Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 John - the S2 111R has a Toyota engine... :-) Andy - I think you meant 70mph, didn't you ? No idea where the sensor wuld be though for that engine. It'll be sticking out of a coolant fitting / pipe somewhere, though - just a case of getting your head into every nook and cranny you can and having a good look. Not easy, though, with the Toyota engine - there's even less space around it than the K-series I think.
chris_h Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Under hard acceleration, when its cold, when the car has only just got up to temp I've had it drop and disapear. If it stays like that then I think it's the thermostat that's broken, stuck open would do that.

Nope. I have not been able to get the second cam- it is as if I have just started the engine, even if I have been driving for 30 mins plus.

Always try to avoid doing this when the car has been standing for a long time like over night and especially in these temperatures. What's happening is the thermostat is just starting to open as it's just got up to temperature, then with high engine revs it forces the coolant around the system really quick before the thermostat can close back up. So basically you're just dumping all the cold water from your coolant system straight into a warm engine at high rpm. Thermal shock can cause even the strongest of head gaskets to go or even worse.
