Jonathan E Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 I'm planning on a few jobs over the winter and will need to remove the rear clamshell on my 99 S1. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good guide, the one on seloc is pretty poor tbh and I'm looking for something a little more "informed" is there a pictorial guide upon the interweb??. Any tips, tricks or advice on the subject are very welcome. Tia Jon
surrealillusions Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 This one any good or is this one that you already looked at and thought it wasnt any good? http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Remove_the_rear_clamshell
Jonathan E Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 Thats the one, it does give all the info required but references to "black plastic things" don't help and it appears to have been written by someone on speed I'm probably being a bit picky but a little punctuation would be helpful Just wondered if there was a better guide out there.
surrealillusions Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 references to "black plastic things" don't help Thats a highyl technical term and is used by most technicians with so many qualifications that they dont have any wallpaper..just lots of certificates Anyway, found this afte a quick search on Goooooogle: http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f101/there-post-removing-rear-clam-51971/
Jonathan E Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 Thanks. Thats for an S2 though, are there many differences I wonder
surrealillusions Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 D'oh...didnt realise. It came up for a search for "elise s1 rear clam removal" or something No idea how similiar/different the S2's are to the S1's...i suppose theres more room for hairdryers and stuff like that in the boot.
JonS Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Afraid I had the same issue, so I had to make my own and suck it and see. NB That SELOC one has NOTHING on my front clam blog
graeme_laslett Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I've just taken the rear clam off my S1 following the picture from the Service Manual (and a few tips off Martin) and even then there were some differences between the car and the service manual. Just take a steady approach to it and you'll be fine HTH G
steve-n Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 if you need a hand let me know. I'll be intrested to find out what needs to be done for removal.
Jonathan E Posted October 28, 2010 Author Posted October 28, 2010 Thanks everyone, looks like I'll have to write a blog like JonS(very impressive), Steve, your more than welcome but my brother has kindly cleared his garage for my use this winter so won't be doing this in Shrewsbury. I'll attempt a write up and can assure those interested that it will be slightly better than the seloc one. Cheers
steve-n Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 happy to travel, as i may be getting mine off soon for a respray....... along with the front
Martin R Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Removing an S1 rear clam is easy compared to a short tail S2. However removing an S2 front clam is easy compared to a S1 Swings and roundabouts i suppose. Once you have replaced the rusty fixings with S/S ones and a bit of grease on the threads its relatively easy. Having the right tools helps. Jon if its not to far away and you need a hand PM me.
JonS Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 ...removing an S2 front clam is easy... ... of course that depends on who is doing the removing!
kayj_prod Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Removing an S1 rear clam is easy compared to a short tail S2. However removing an S2 front clam is easy compared to a S1 8< I'm just thinking about removing my rear clam to check for any further damage after The Reversing Incident the other weekend. I'm glad to read the S1 rear is easy if the S1 front is hard.
kayj_prod Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Hi Jonathan How did you get on removing your rear clam last year? I need to take mine off in October in preparation for the repair work it needs (chose to run it through the summer rather than taking it off the road for weeks) and I thought you might have some pointers. The only part that is confusing me at the moment is the fuel filler. To me, it looks like the screws under the filler cap have to be removed and then the clam slid over the filler neck perhaps?
