I wouldn't take my dinky toy to a Rover/MG garage....

There are plenty of specialists around who will service the car, Ragtop Roadsters in Cheshire being somewhere up norf!

I wouldn;t be so sure on PX being bad.. i was offered more in PX for my old car against an S2 than i managed to sell it privately... then i saw sense and bought a proper Loti :)

Reading EVO this month, I noticed they picked the S1 over the S2, despite saying the S2 has moved the game on.

Doesnt make sense to me... but still...notch one up for the S1 boys :)

Ignore those who are S1 obsessed. They know nothing. Well, some of them anyway.

S2 is a good car for everyday use if you don't have a family or need to transport large things, although you can get a set of golf clubs in or a surf board if you make an effort. In terms of sports tourer pack I would get one, or if you're feeling a little more flush get an S2 111s, which basically has all of that stuff but about a third more power than the standard car and funky wheels.

The thing with the VX is that (and I am a badge snob) it's a bit ugly, in my opinion, I don't think that the interior is as nice and really seems quite cheap and nasty in some aspects, it doesn't have that special feel I don't think (lotus is an aspirational marque, whereas I don't think that the same is true of vauxhall), and although you'll pay less at the outset, you'll get shed loads less back too. If you can afford it I would go for a lotus every time, but then I suppose I would say that. VX is quick, good value and relatively rare.

Regarding insurance, I'd say a grand is about an average price. Some have managed to get lower, some much higher. Age, postcode, other named drivers have a big part to play. Try putting the g/f on and see what happens to the quote. Can make a big difference.

Kristian :)

Sorry - should also have said that that figure for servicing sounds like crap to me unless you're doing a lot of miles. And don't even think about taking it to a rover dealer, if you're bothered about retaining your warranty or a working car. Even from an expensive main dealer the average A service should cost around £200-£220, B service (at 27k miles or 3 years) about £450 and C service (54k miles) about £700, and there are plenty of specialists around who can be much cheaper. I don't know how true this is either but I understand that servicing the VX can be dicey since it's not exactly a standard vauxhall, is it, and therefore requires a bit of specialist TLC.

  • 4 weeks later...

So whats with all the carpet/no carpet snobbery? My S2 has carpets, but they are only held in by a few bits of velcro and can all be removed in under a minute.

I was tied between a vx turbo and a 111s. but the vauxhall dealer was a bit of a knob to be honest. he didn't want to do any deals and to be honest i don't thin he wanted to sell me the car.

To be fair, I know alot of this S1vS2 debate is banter, but IMO neither car is better than the other. The S2 improved alot of areas over the S1, but also lost some of the raw driving appeal of the S1. I went for an S2 gos I wanted a new car, prefer the look, wanted a few more comforts and liked the lower sills.

I do think that some of the comments made by owners would put off potential new owners, we're not all like that;-)

Agree with Mr G there...

It comes down to personal preferences and what you want at the time.... I couldn't afford an S2 and did prefer the look of an S1, so was fairly conclusive for me!

You ain't gonna be disappointed with either though to be fair....

Simon 111s

interesting comments, the Vauxhall dealer I went to didn't want to sell me a VX either. I went to the other bigger branch and left details, they never bothered to contact me.

Was 99% gonna buy the lotus anyhows, just for the badge!

(Ooooh! can one say that?)
