Ive got the same bloody noise. :D Just appeared from nowhere. I've done loads of searches on here and SELOC and it seems to be that it could be one of the following:

- Low oil

- Hydraulic tappets running a bit dry (a 'spirited' drive can sort this)

- the fuel purge valve (i think thats what its called) (but it doesn't alter with engine revs)

- A leaking exhaust manifold

- A case of the fact that some K-series tend to get all tappety in the winter and its nothing to worry about.

- Something majorly serious :drive:

so far I've looked into all of the above and found nothing wrong with mine yet it still rattles. Ocverall it seems Ok though, so I suppose I'll have to live with it. I always have in the back of my mind that it's only an old rover engine and if the engine does let go it gives me an excuse for an audi turbo conversion!! :P

Good Luck..

Mine reminds me of my old mark 2 Fiesta 1.1 Popular. Sometimes my mind really focus on rattling sounds whilst driving, much to my annoyance as I probably need to learn to live with it! :drive:

If, as I presume, the Elise has hydraulic valves, then these are always noisy on any engine until fully warm.

The noise will be much worse if a) the car is left unused for a few days or :drive: left unused and then started in this cold weather.

The oil seeps back into the sump ( which is why we talk so much of a good oil as a film of protection should stay on the top end ) and the noise is the clearances 'running dry'. As the oil pumps and warms, the gaps are all cushioned by it....no or little noise.

So if the noise is clearing when the engine is warm, no worries.

This noise is also letting you know why you should never, ever rev an engine from cold.

( Did have a Ford which had a catching plate above the valves. It caught heaps of oil before it seeped past the valves on shutdown, then opened again on start-up. So the car was injected with oil from the top and below.

Still took 30-60 seconds to sound OK, and was bloody frightening in the winter )

I've got the same noise too. Changes with engine revs, and only occurs on acceleration, not on deceleration/overrun. Engine has done 19k miles and oil is good quality synthetic, right grade, topped up to max. mark on dipstick.

I too have heard that 'spirited' driving can cure things. Hasn't in my case - maybe I'm not trying hard enough.

Doesn't seem to be getting any worse, and there are no other warning signs from the engine bay so I decided to stop worrying about it.....

Ditto. Just topped my oil back up to max (was half way between min and max) as a precaution, but the engine *feels* OK. I recently went deaf in one ear (most inconvienent) so it's hard to tell how bad the noise it. Still worrying tho.

I'm pretty sure mine didn't used to be as obvious as it is now. It doesn't seem to change much when the engine warms up so I assumed it was the exhaust manifold

FWIW I have a tapping noise which appeared as the air temp got lower, only under accel and only after the 'stat opens. This is the vapour purge solenoid valve, for some reason it's louder in the cold and it won't ever go away unless you take out the carbon cannister and gubbins.

I also get the tappety noise as the tappets re-fill, that's just her way of telling you you should driver her more!

Quite alot on SEL*K in the tech forums, worried the hell out of me at first!

If it's not using oil / water and you have no loss in power then turn up the radio!

Good Luck

It could just be your fuel recycle selenoid - if the noise is over your left shoulder. Makes a ticking which increases with revs.

well i been using optimax for last two half yrs, never ever put anything else in except once used shell 95 ron, i got tapett'y noise then so reverted back to optimax n its always been fine, no more noise, although stress, i have noticed ticking noise now n then behind left ear!

i also get a bit of a buzzing noise from the exhaust, i been told from a reliable knowledgable source that it is the bendy bit on the zorst down pipe, a 4-2-1 wud cure it, but the £600 is abit of a ball ache! nice if i can afford one though!
