MrHedgehog Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I have an intermittant fault on my speedo, either not working, or when it does it's really juddery. I think I've tracked down the probem to a partial break in the wire behind the speed sensor on the rear nearside wheel. I can't contemplate a new cable as id goes straight into the loom/harness and would just be far to expensive (unless anyone knows a work around). What I do need is a new connector, the bit that the wire is connected to, that plugs into the back of the sensor. Lotus don't stock it, nor any of the other parts places I've tried. Daft thing is, it should be a standard part that wll probably cost less that £1 when I can find one, but no luck so far. It has P.E.D. 14 stamped on in, which as far as I can ascertain stands for Packard Electrical Systems. Found stuff very similar, but not quite the same. Tried Maplin and RS too. Any ideas?
Daniel Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Hello, It's not this is it? http://www.polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/Packard_Timer_Connectors.html Failing that, unless you've gone around that site before I'd have a look. They have allsorts. http://www.polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/Waterproof_Connectors.html Try here too: http://www.automotivewiringsystems.com
MrHedgehog Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks Daniel, but no luck with either of those.
Elise+Imp Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 as a work around you could solder some flying leads, then use a different connector on both loom and sensor make sure its a weatherproof one. and fill all around your soldered connections with silicone or some suitable potting material to keep the muck and water out. or ring a breakers (duglas valley? or you could try junks on seloc) and ask them to cut the plug off with as much wiring as they can.
MrHedgehog Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks, that was actually my plan if I can't get the right part. Already tried a few breakers, icluding Hills & Douglas Valley which are usually very good, but no luck there. It's so frustrating for a daft little component that's probably really common somewhere, if only I knew where!
Elise+Imp Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 i can't remember exactly what they're like but isn't it something like this? http://www.autosparks.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2832 alternatively careful dis-assembly by slipping metal slithers cut from an old feeler gauge down the side of the pins may allow you to take it to bits, then you can search out new pins, which will be available somewhere
MrHedgehog Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Oh, so close, but not quite. Here's a pic:
Martin R Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 If all else fails. I would be very suprised if it is not a generic Rover part. Have a look at the local scrapyard.
Daniel Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 What about this? http://delphi.com/connectors/product/view/12162193?tab=results Better pic here: http://www.pcsconnectors.com/12162193.aspx
MrHedgehog Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Jimbo - it's a series 1. Daniel - that's it! Fantastic, thanks so much!
dobbo Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Am I missing something ? If you need to fit a new connector without changing the wiring, you need to cut the wiring back to before the dodgy bit. Why don't you just re-make the cable at the dodgy bit and not worry with a new connector ? Unless the break is very near the connector, you could struggle with the cable length once you've found the dodgy bit. The proper connector might even need a particular tool to do a proper crimp onto a cable. I'd rather just solder in a new length to replace the dodgy bit. Finally, are you absolutely certain that it's the cable ? The wheel speed sensor is notorious in older S1s. I changed mine earlier this year after 2 years of having an intermittent speedo. The difficulty is finding the problem, especially with an intermittent fault. Initially, I thought mine was a connection problem, as it seemed to be faulty in wet weather, This turned out to be a coincidence, though. Obviously waggling the cable around whilst the speedo should be reading something is a tricky thing to do (!) so unless you bell it through and know it's the cable, I'd go for the sensor first. The magnet on my failed one was only a tiny fraction of the strength of the one in the new sensor.
MrHedgehog Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks Dobbo. That was my plan B with the connector, but while the wiring definitely needs replacing anyway, I thought I'd replace the connector at the same time. Not actually sure that the sensor isn't faulty too, but thought I'd start with the wiring & connector first.
Daniel Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Jimbo - it's a series 1. Daniel - that's it! Fantastic, thanks so much! I found it here, page 76. http://delphi.com/connectors/assets/product_brochure/met150.pdf There are a few different part numbers for different sized cables.
