Competition Time - Any F1 Fans Amongst You?

Every year I enter a friendly F1 competition to predict the first 3 drivers in each race and also the fastest lap. This year (if you're up for it) I've decided to make it an mloc entry :) The person/team with the most points at the end of the season gets a crate of champagne so it's got to be worth a go!!! (and it isn't any old cheap tesco blonk either!!)

A couple of days before each race i get an email from the organiser and he gives an update on current standings and a bit of blurb on his opinion on all things F1 related.

I've copied his first email below.

All I need from you lot is your opinon on 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions and who will get the fastest lap. The most popular answers will be put forward.

Copy of his latest email for sunday mornings race:

Hi All,

So here we go, the big off has finally arrived after a seemingly eternal wait, but what to say about the coming season and this race in particular? This is probably the worst race to pontificate about because there is so much to say about the last five months, rule changes, driver changes, team changes, engine changes but perhaps after the dust has settled on Sunday maybe we will find that nothing really changes…………… I hope not!

I am sure that all of you know about the new changes to the cars but the reality is that the grid looks more like a 'gizmo-free' zone now with launch control, traction control and assisted engine braking all missing from a race teams shopping list. We also have changes to the rules about qualifying, remember that awful 10 minute fuel burning farce in the final qualifying session, gone too, now its just 10 minutes of mad activity as it should have been all along. The old 10 place penalty remains for engine changes but you do get one change free with no penalty (!), whilst gearboxs also incur five grid place penalties also this year. Finally the race fuel must have 6% biofuel content so expect the smell of methane to permeate our nostrils as the cars race by on the track!

After testing McLaren and Ferrari are still out in front, BMW are still making up ground whilst Williams could surprise a few. Honda have to improve but they do have Ross Brawn up their sleeves which has to help. Renault are already on page 74 of their '2008 excuses manual' although I seem to remember the 2007 manual said 'we are waiting for 2008'! Don't expect too much there then. Toyota, oh Toyota, why don't they just take £300m in used notes and set fire to them, it would save all this rushing around the world for nil return!

Driver wise it could be all about Hamilton and Kimi the Finn, whilst in the background Massa's ongoing chant of 'I am not the number two in this team' will fall on deaf ears. Kovalainen will be the surprise package, last year he was like a rabbit caught in the headlights, performing poorly for the first half dozen races. Lets hope he's on song straight away this time. Rosberg will have matured, even Kubica's headache may have gone after Canada's airborne antics!

So what of last years race? Was it a portent of things to come? Who knows but Kimi the Finn led from start to finish. Ofcourse at the time we were all amazed by the antics of Hamilton in his first outing, leading at one stage but eventually finishing third behind snake-in-the-grass Alonso. At the time we thought it was outstanding, later on it just became the norm, but how will that extra pressure effect him this season? It's a tricky course with barriers far too close for comfort on many parts of the track. As this is the first race without driver aids they may just get an even closer inspection than normal. I was going to say look out for the newly designed Merc safety car but somehow I think its a forgone conclusion you will!

The race is off at 4.30am so (advice for newcomers here) if you can't get up (shame on you) make sure you get a prediction in early, it doesn't count if you get it to me just before the later TV rerun!

Best of luck for the season………..

So come on guys, what do you reckon?

(p.s. last year I was middle of the table by the end, and that was mostly due to my patriotic Hamilton votes!)

I'm definitely up for it! As the organiser's email says, predicting the first race result is going to be a tricky one. When do you have to submit your entry - before first practice, before qualifying or simply before the race?

Here are my top three:

1. Massa

2. Raikkonen

3. Hamilton

Fastest lap: Hamilton

Hamilton will lose 30 seconds on his first stop while he trundles along the pit lane looking for the new location of the McLaren garage :)

Does anyone know how they have allocated the paddock and pit space, in regard to McLaren receiving no constructors points last year? The guy on the radio [albeit Radio 1's Newsbeat] said that McLaren were about half-way along in the paddock. I'd expect Force India to be last [as a new/renamed team], but then McLaren after them.

I have to make sure I send the email any time before the start of the actual race, I normally wait until after qualifying for obvious reasons.

Mclaren are in the middle because down the 'poor' end of the pitlane, there isn't enough space for their huge motorhome and trucks. I think they're between williams and redbull.

I work for a team from the poor end of the pitlane (Force India F1) and in my opinion Mclaren are situated where they are through soom sort of deal done with the FIA.
