M111 Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 When I got my Elise a year ago it was fitted with a 'new' battery under warranty. 12 months on and it seems knackered. Granted, I don't drive the car nearly enough and I generally let it tick over for 20-30 minutes to recharge when I hear the alarm squeal just as the battery is drained. Wrong, I know. I made enquiries into buying a new battery. The garage checked their book and reckon I need an 075 size battery (600+ cranking amps) but from what I see it is a 330 amp hour battery which might be an 063 battery. It is a '97 S1. As for price, I have been quoted a rather respectable £33 for the 075 and told the 063 is cheaper. Any ideas as for which is the correct, or best one to go for? Secondly, I have heard they can be difficult to fit. Surely not? Gary
mickmack Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 I have just replaced my battery with standard 063 from halfords at £45 with 3 year guarantee -380Amps. Halfords do a heavy duty version which is the same as the one I replaced HCB 063, its costs about £53 with 4 year guarantee - 400Amps. The battery I replaced did not look that old, probabley still under guarantee, as I do not have the receipt I could not take it back. I think I knackered it over the winter with to many jump starts. It would run flat in about 3 days standing. New battery kicked fine after a week! Would recommend trickle charger is you can run power to the car when parked. If going for a solar power charger I think you need at least 400mA/h to replace alarm current draw.
Integra99 Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 I had a Halfords Battery with 4 year guarantee ( Came with the car). Battery went dead so took it back to Halfords to give it a go. Usual no receipt cant help you but confirm the batts dead, so had a little moan and said how much I spend in Halfords and dissapointed as the battery was flat before warranty and as I was about to admit defeat when they said ok and presented me with brand new battery + receipt which is now safe!! So well worth a try!! Ha ha I have just replaced my battery with standard 063 from halfords at £45 with 3 year guarantee -380Amps. Martin R Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 I did a bit of research into batteries when i needed one for my S1 111s not long ago ( sad i know ) The general concencus on Exiges . com was the Bosch silver 4 PN was the one for the job, 45 AH 420 A (EN) which is the cold cranking current i think. It also has a number on it 545 171 042 i think this is the Bosch part number. £28.93 from Costo including VAT. You may need an account at Costco mind HTH.
Steve_C Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 I've heard about lots of premature flat batteries on Elises. Probably because you can't leave them too long before the alarm renders the battery dead. Once a battery goes dead, it will never charge back to its former self. I've got a trickle charger for mine when stored away in the garage - probably worth thinking about. I've seen solar powered trickle chargers for around a tenner - might be a worthwhile investment.
