Oil Advice And Recommendations Here

I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.

So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:

Make

Model

Year

Engine size/type

Any mods

Type of use (road/track)

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?

OK - I'll start

Elise with a SC Honda lump (Ka20 with Jackon Racing SC)

Laminova Oil cooler with remote filter

Mostly road - some track planned

No idea what oil is already in as I only bought it a couple of month ago

Have seen a few different recommendations ranging from 0-40 to 15-50.

Your experience and suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hondas love thin, low viscosity oils. From new these engines have 0w-20 in them. We would suggest a good shear stable 5w-40 synthetic. For track use ester based is the best.

Look no further then the Motul 300v and the Silkolene Pro S.

How about engine oil for a 1985 kit Classic SE Caterham 7 1600cc Ford crossflow engine with 1600 miles on it, just ran in, engine on a pallet for 20yrs, built last year, always driven hard (after a warm up of course).

Lives outside under a car port, open top vehicle, so normally used in warmish weather as its also fitted with semi slick treads.

If I recall Shell Helix mineral 15W - 40 at low revs cs thats always in my stores then I dumped it, currently a foul smelling green Castrol cant remember what spec may be 5W - 50 I think.

If the engine is as good as new I would look at a good shear stable 5w-40 synthetic, the best of these being ester based such as the Silkolene Pro S and the Motul 300v.

Didnt mean to mention brands, any decent 5w-40 shear stable synthetic, stick to the premium brands as you will get what you pay for

Hi Oilman.

Which oil would be best for me?

S1 sport 160

Its a second car and doesnt not do massive amount of miles. probably 6,000 a year. It will be used on track a few times over the year too.

Car has done 40,000 miles and gets some stick. Always warmed up for a long time before giving it a work out though.

Also how often would you change it? taking into account track use?

5w-40 synthetic is what I would go for, how often you change it depends on which one you go for, the top synthetics (ester based ones) will only need changing once a year with your kind of use and mileage. Midrange synthetics (some of which are hydrocracked mineral oils) with track use and your mileage around twice a year.

Put Silkolene Pro S in mine after 1500 miles (bought from Opie Oils of course). Hopefully its the best protection you can buy since I'm now a regular (and adicted) 2nd cam user!
