This may seem like a stupid question, but here goes - is the tracking difficult, or more difficult, to set up on an Elise than a "normal" car?

 

Mine is way out, and has ruined my front tyres. I had some new ones fitted yesterday and the tyre fitter said "you'll have to take it to Lotus" for the tracking.

My suspicion is he just didn't fancy it - he had a queue of easier jobs waiting.

 

Where can I get it done in Notts next weekend, does anyone know? I am down for the geo day (obviously!) but have a track day at Blyton before then and don't want to take £100 worth of rubber off running tracking a mile out.

 

Any advice much appreciated guys.

No it's not more difficult if you have a lift, it is extremely easy if you take the front clam off.

 

however you might find the worn tires are from the camber you are running - maybe the car was set up for track use - a normal garage will not be used to setting or measuring camber because few everyday cars are adjustable for camber.

Thanks Simon. It is not set up with a lot of negative camber, and the tyre wear was fine until quite recently - I suspect potholes are to blame.

 

I am booked in to have the geo done, but want the tracking vaguely right for the track day I am doing before then.

How about mgr racing in notts dean? I think they would be my first stop?

 

Or ask gav? He may know a place nearby? He might even do it, there doesn't seem anything he can't do? I'm off next week if you need a lift or anything?

Thanks Scatty, I spoke to Mike at MGW about this a few weeks ago and he suggested I take it to a tyre fitting placeso I am guessing he doesn't fancy it. Gav is a bit too far away for such a little job. If Michael at Tollbar is not busy maybe he would do it but it would be easier if I could find somewhere local. I think I will ring a few places tomorrow...

Does your dad's mate at Warsop do tracking?

In my experiance some people do a good job and many don't - Mark Bowles's car [T25 S2] was awful to drive when I first drove in 2 years ago, yet it had been set up by a Lotus race specialist with years on the Elise. Discovered the setup was really out. A friend about to have one of my engines took his 190 Elise to a Lotus specialist just west of London with a big reputation for setting up Elises, the guy that owns it posts regularly and very informatively on seloc and was very successful on lot 2006, yet did a shocker of a job on this car, turns out it was set up for a honda conversion, so ride heights were set for a much heavier car, and the notes said "Very light Elise" - they should have made sure their geo was for the nindividual car and not generic, anyway Peter had to get Steve G to do it again. Patience and care....

 

I think most normal garages are not used to doing geo carefully at all - why would they be, most cars are not adjustable except for toe, and getting it exactly right on a shopping trolly is neither here nor there to drivers or garages. But my experience is specialists can be casual about it too, choose who does the work carefully, but get them to give you a set up sheet with exactly what was done so you have a record and go back if you have to.

my dads mate can deffo do it for you dean if you want to take it to warsop ( correct spelling). the number is 01623 842272 and ask for dale...i phoned him this morning....

 

to be honest, id prob try the place in basford first, as its their field of work...but either way you should get it done nearby and before your trackday....

Steve is where I take mine and he is great, I see you are going on the Geo day, but if yours is out and you are going to see Steve, then you might as well get him to do the lot

Thanks for all the help guys - I am booked in to the place at Basford Scatty put me on to. It is just to look at the tracking on the front axle, to tide me over until I get all the geometry done on the geo day by Tollbar Racing.

Mike at Tollbar (AKA Doc Brown - you will know why if you see him!) always did the geo (or "flat patch" as he calls it, but he is getting on a bit) on my old Formula Ford, and also my vx220 and I trust him.
