Last night I test drove a nice 111S but sometime did not feel right about the gear change. Does anyone live in or around Chesterfield? Ideally I would like to see what the right gear change looks like. I can only describe the gear change as floppy. Gear selection was not easy and there seemed to be a lot of play. thank you It's probably just worn linkage bushes, I wouldn't let that put you off as most Elise's will feel like that to some degree, the gear change really is the Achilles heel of the K-series cars. It is however cheap and easy to sort out, rear cable bushes can be changed to polyurethane, nylon or even sealed bearings. The bell crank linkage can be changed to rose joints and the main shifter section can be tweaked also. All of this can be done for under £50 and an hour or two in the garage. Quote
DeanB Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Are you around on Sunday morning Alan? I think I will be at Hassop Station Cafe if you fancy a ride over you can try mine. I am going to suggest a run so there may be others to try. If it helps there isn't that much involved in the gearchange - there are bushes on the box itself that can become problematic but better nylatron replacement are about £18. If it's really bad then the cables may need attention - i think there is some adjustment but they may need replacing. Look at Eliseparts for prices. The box itself is very unlikely to be damaged - they are very strong. If the car is really good a gearchange that needs attention would not put me off. I would try and get some money off to pay for the fix and take it to Gav at Unit 4 in Burton. He will sort it. Dean Quote
Luke Seagrave Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Hi Alan, You would be welcome to have a drive in my s2 111R. But it's just trying to coordinate a meet up as I'm based near Mansfield. If I see that you are likely to be joining us on one of the meet ups, I will try and also attend. Thanks, Luke Quote
AlanG Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 Thank you for your feedback and offers of help. I will try and attend on Sunday morning, subject to time, Dean. Luke, I have an office in Mansfield, if that helps to bring me closer to where you are based? Quote

You are welcome to pop round but PM me first to check I will be in. Dean Quote

AlanG Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 Thank you Dean and Luke. Would be great to take you up on your offer and also obtain some of your wisdom on the Elise. Quote
winthattt Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 What a great bunch helping in this community. They are right, fixing a gear change is cheap and easy, Gavin at Unit 4 is ultra reliable. Jon Seal sells lotus at the right prices (Wakefield), use his prices as a reference. Obviously you should pay less for private sale (5-7pc) as you are not getting the prep and warranty. Condition is everything along with good maintenance, but not obsessive, it’s only an MGF mechanically. Mileage does not really matter but it does to buyers. Quote

Hi Alan, No problem, if its wisdom that you are after then Dean is certainly the person to speak to. 😊 unfortunately I won't be at the run this weekend. If you do go, hope you get to learn a few things about Lotus ownership. Then if you are still interested, I could always catch up with you in the following weeks. Best Wishes, Luke Quote
Guido Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 You’ll go with a plan to buy a K Series S2 Elise and come away with a S3 Elise Cup 250! It’s a slippery slope. 😳 1 Quote

My K series car has 125k miles btw. Quote
AlanG Posted August 24, 2024 Author Posted August 24, 2024 Thank you for all the advice. I am really grateful. I look forward to joining you at Hassop. Quote
Luke Seagrave Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 Hi Alan, Did you get to speak to Dean at Hassop? Thanks, Luke Quote
AlanG Posted September 15, 2024 Author Posted September 15, 2024 Hi Luke Yes, I did speak with Dean. He was very helpful. My instinct was right on the gears. I am still looking to the right Elise though. Best wishes Quote
