Improvement?

I have a S2 111 Elise and the previous owner had fitted a rubbish K&N air filter which jst sucks up the hot air and blows it into my engine. after much deliberation with Lotus Specialiasts and mechanics i have decided to buy a pipercross air filter over the basic Hurricane as the mechanics advised the Hurricane has similar problems with the K&N as the aluminium cone heats up with the engine and the cold air gets heated up and released.

What improvement should i expect with the pipercross? will i be able to hear any noise differences from the K&N.

I do have a sport exhausts fitted.

Thanks guys :D

K&N only take in warm air when the vehicle is stationary as the side vents supply the cold air through the feed pipe so how does that affect performance?

Pipercross, Hurricane and ITG Maxogen (seriously look into this one as it has a carbon fibre cone) will improve induction. Noise levels will be better with anything over standard & then again over a K&N.

How you doin with your cat? That can make a big difference?

TBH that sounds shite ! The Hurricane comes with a length of pipe and a fitting to go directly onto the rear of the side air scoop - thus feeding outside air (only) to the air intake. Any heat from the engine getting to the ally cone and heating the air will be less than the ambient air temp inside the engine bay.

Not familiar with the Pipercross, but there's certainly nothing wrong with the Hurricane design.

Pipercross and Hurricane do the same thing really - flexi pipe to direct the air + cone filter. Main difference is that Hurricane uses a cotton filter whereas Pipercross uses reticulated foam. Both need cleaning & re-oiling periodically (IMO, more often than each service), although foam should be freer breathing as it gets dirty.

Had a hurricane on last car, have pipercross on this (feeding d2htb's via a cold air box). Both better than std.

Hurricane now do a carbon fibre cone! Extra £55 i think?

I have an ITG which i am very pleased with...i would go for the carbon fibre Hurricane otherwise.

Thats wrong Carlylove as the Elise vents actually dont suck air in when the car is moving!

Surely you are not suggesting air does not enter the vents at the side?

Thay cant be there just to make it look pretty can they?

Prob not origonally, but someone tested them and they produce positive pressure if anything!

Hence why you need to duct any filter to the vents!

K&N sucks hot engine bay air all the time, even when moving as the air vents are only going to expell hot air as they do not produce a 'ram effect'.

Hurricane etc suck cold(er) air from outside as they have a feed pipe from the filter to the vent.

Surely anyone fitting even a K&N would have the sense to have a feed pipe running from the side vents to run cold air to it No?

But then you need to have a sytem that contains the filter into a box, so you don't suck in any of the engine bay air!

Easier to get a hurricane etc!

When i bought my car last year it had a Pipercross 'open' airfilter...like the k & N i think that you are talking about.

Lotus at Norwich said that it would be worth putting the original system back on instead...so i took it down to the Lotus Exeter dealer with me in a box...never been used apart from its' delivery miles.

When i picked it up they had taken the Pipercross off, repaired a split, cleaned and re-oiled it and put it back on....and extended an inlet pipe so that it blew more cold air over it when driving???????? WHY??????? I got charged probably at least an hours labour for that!!!!!!

A month later i just bought the ITG...which is ace! :P
