kayj_prod Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Driving back along the M62 early hours of Wednesday morning, I got a horrendous noise from the back of the Honda. I stopped and found the off rear disk extremely hot as the calliper had seized on. My local independent garage has replaced the calliper and pads. I wonder if this is at all connected with a previous thread of mine about my MPG dropping? Anyway, I have been in touch with the Honda garage which serviced my car only at Christmas as the warranty expired. I told them at the time that I had been getting some squealing from the rear brakes but they couldn't find a problem. They have already agreed that they will look at my invoice from the local garage and make some deduction against my next service. So the car has 47000 miles on the clock. Is it reasonable for a calliper to give up after this many miles? Do you think I should push for them to cover all the parts cost? Its a good job I used the Elise to go to France!
TheRon Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Any idea why the caliper seized? Has a rubber boot perished (or been torn in some way) and let the grease out? My brother had a front caliper on an Astra seize on slightly and after 10 mins of driving he got an extremely violent vibration through the front wheel, the disc was glowing red !

I figured it was something to do with a seal... The vibration sounds familiar. It must have been very unpleasant to have through the front. My handbrake was making an interesting sound...
pablo_paul Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Should last the life of the car really but as with everything things brake. Ha see what i did. Whenever you design anything you expect a percentage of failures. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathtub_curve You've just been unlucky.
Martin R Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 If a car in its past history has not been used for long periods it gives problems. One of the first things are the brake calipers sieze and play up forever after.
kayj_prod Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 I don't think that could be the case here Martin... 4 years old with 47000. The only days it doesn't get used is when I drive the Elise. I think Paul might have it- just been unlucky. Anyway, I expressed to the garage how disappointed I was about the 'life' of this calliper and not what I'd expected of Honda, blah blah blah. They've covered the whole cost which is a pretty good outcome. Considering they initially quoted £250 for calliper, £95 for pads + labour and VAT, they probably consider my local garage doing it a cheaper option!
