MilesH Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 My latest gadget purchase I've been after some portable ipod speakers for a while, but never been happy with the sound quality of ones I've tested. Went into the Bicester retail outlet village today and asked for a demo on the Bose SoundDock, needless to say I was very impressed! Managed to pick up a discounted unit as it had a small scratch on the back for £139 so even better My opinion, worth every penny! Has anybody else tried them? http://www.electricshop.com/iPod+MP3-Acces...utm_source=base
JonS Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Superb sound quality. Very much a fan of Bose products. Incidentally, IIRC, B&O ( aparently superior products) use Bose sound technology, for 1/3rd of the price! Good purchase Miles
the_privateer Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I was given a Bose portable sound dock in April as a leavers present, my father has the mains power one as well. It's a fantastic sounding piece of kit, with no loss of performance when unplugged. It is that good it is unforgiving of poor compression on MP3's. I made the move to a Mac in 2007, so took this as the opportunity to scan my CD's into iTunes at 256kb/s rather than 128kb. Ideally I'd recommend using Apple Loseless for compress, but it is drive space heavy, but I use 256kb without much difference. I am a bit of a home cinema buff and my long term plan was to continue to get hifi separates, but the sound dock is that good that it is all we listen to. I would recommend that you do some iTunes house cleaning and set up playlists for types of music or for individual albums depending on your preferences as there is a change playlist function that is handy operated from the remote. I did actually want the B&W Zepplinn, it looks amazing and if you demo it in the Apple shop you will find it to be bassier and treats rock music better than the sound dock. I prefer the look of the zepplinn, but practically the sound dock sounds a lot better with a wider range of music and is a far more sensible size & shape. In short, it is a fantastic purchase and has replaced my hifi system. But just remember it will show up poor compression, crap compression in -> crap sounding music out. Enjoy a great purchase!
