Mil (malfunction Indicator Lamp) Comes On Day Before Mot

Yesterday, I accelerated up a hill, not particularly hard, and i heard a sharp pop. Car felt ok the rest of the journey and commuting to work this morning. On the way home tonight, the ca felt a bit sluggish pulling away, going round a corner off a roundabout changing into 3rd and the car shuddered and immediately the MIL light came on. I pulled for the road into a car park straight away, and drove around a little in 1st & 2nd and it felt ok. Revving higher the car sounded like it was firing on 3.

I got my manual out the boot (!) and checked what it said about the MIL light:

The MIL is provided to warn the driver that the engine management system has detected a fault which may result in increased noxious emissions from the exhaust

and it agoes on..

If the MIL lights continuously whilst driving, dealer advice should be sought without delay, and all unnecessary journeys avoided.

It was 5:56pm and thought I'd give Nick Whale's a call. Fortunately James answered, and put me through to Ian. He explained it may be a spark on the way out. My issue is, they are MOT'ing it tomorrow, and hope to get a chance to look at the problem before hand. I have the car booked in at TGA next Thursday for an A-Service and some other work.

Any other thoughts on this problem? Could the increased emissions be an issue??

They should start with the spark plugs, HT leads then the coil packs.

They should sort the mis fire before the MOT because it could cause it to fail. I am sure there will not be a problem because they will have all the parts to swap out and I cant see that it would take them more than thirty minutes.

I had my coil packs changed round last year due to a mis fire and it never came back.

Ok here we go have there are 2 lamba scensers on the exhaust one at the bottom of the down pips and one after the cat one of these could be faulty .

as soon as they put there fault meter on they will tell you which one is .

Normally the light will go out after 3-5-10 start up its how the ECU as been programme.

As for the mot if the lights on it will fail sorry.

The dealer can reset the ECU clear the faults then go to the garage for its mot .

Thanks, NW are MOT'ing it as well.

I drove in to work this morning (only a very short communte) and the light did not come on. I didnt take it much about 2,800 / 3,000 revs, but it seemed to be reving differnetly, tick over was about 800rpm, normally around 1000rpm.

Hopefully its just a coil.

Just got to drive 25 minutes to NW this afternoon, fingers crossed!

It sound like you need to set the air flow censer turn the ignition on do not start press the throttle up and down five times turn of again then start the car this will reset set the air flow censer.

It was a shot coil in the end. Thankfully NW got it sorted and MOT'd no problem.

Thanks to Ian for sorting it out and squeezing the car in today :D:P
