Martin R Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Im on what Liz calls a fools errand to eliminate all the rattles in my S1. Some woman have no faith. My passenger side window rattles like a good one over bumps. I decided to find out why. After a bit of investigation, it turns out the rear guide rail rubber seal was missing. You will see as we go along. This may be useful to the people who want to replace the outside side window seals that bubble with rust. First pic tools i used. 1/4 drive socket set and ball end Allen keys. The offending window. Ive removed the handle and the inner trim. For some reason you have to refit the polythene ( according to the service manual, so i did after i finished ) Wind the window down and remove the inner door seal. It should just pull off You have to do this to allow you to remove the window. There are 3 x 6mm nuts holding the window in. I have replaced mine with nylocks to stop them coming loose the first time i tried to cure this problem. Here is the middle one The rear and middle ones are easy to undo. The front one is " cough " not easy. I found in the end using a 10mm offset ring spanner the best. So you may need one of the as well. It will take a while and winding the window up or down will improve access. So try one of these. In here Out at last. The best way is to lift it and as it gets near the top, tilt it in towards the inside of the car. In this pic ive shown the clips holding the outer seal to the door. These are what you have to remove if you are replacing the outer window seal.
PeterField Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Nice mug work once again Martin! ......although if i'm being picky i'd have liked to see one in every shot! Good job on the rattle fix though, nice one.
Martin R Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 Here,s the rear channel with no seal. No wonder it rattled in the guide This is what should be in there. The seal is rubber with a bit of felt stuck on it. You buy it flat but it bends up to suit the channel, like so. Add a bit of glue and slide it in. Whilst we are here. If you do a bit of DIY you may find this useful. A bendy stick with a magnet on. It gets dropped nuts out of doors All you have to do now is pop the window back in and do up the front nut It may take a while. To replace the inner seal, wind the window down and slide it on. A bit of washing up liquid may help. Replace the trim and the jobs a good one. It dont rattle either. I also found a mint toffee under the seat and eliminated another rattle. A good day all in all.
Stumason10 Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Martin just noticed you live in the same place as where I originally come from...Also now have a bit of a mission to reduce rattles, knocks and random vibrations! Must be something in the Brummy water!! My Folks still live there near Shenley Green..!
Daniel Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Nice on Martin, you make it look so easy, when I did mine I removed the door handle pull think on the inside and chipped my arms to shreds, dunno why I did that in hindsight. Love the mug shot
Scott_Mac Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Hmm, suggests mine needs to pop back to Mike then as my drivers side one has rattled like nobodys business since they fixed it last time - i wonder if this is the same issue!?
Mish Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Hi, Where did you buy the bits from, both mine are rattly and I think its the samme thing... I'm going to try and get the passengers window the stop 'drooping' as well, not found the bolt still so guess its the one I can't see!!! Cheers, H
Martin R Posted April 12, 2007 Author Posted April 12, 2007 Hamish / Scott, the rubber strip was a tenner from Nick Whales. I doubt if yours is missing as it should be in there. Its more likely to be either the nuts that hold the window in have come loose or the window fixings at the bottom have come away from the glass. ( see pics ) They are glued on and quite often come away from the window. HTH.
