When Takuma Sato takes on one of his biggest motorsport challenges to date, the 2010 Indianapolis 500, he will do so with a special piece of automotive design adorning the cockpit of the #5 Lotus-KVRT Dallara-Honda.
After qualifying in 31st place on Bump Day, Lotus are pulling out all the stops to make sure Taku has everything he needs to get him through the 500-mile marathon, and keeping his head firmly screwed on during the race will be a unique helmet livery featuring images of Lotus cars past and present.
Encapsulating the evolutionary vibe at Lotus, the helmet features Jim Clark's Indy 500 winning Lotus 38 on one side and an image of Sato's current IndyCar on the other, with everyone hoping that having a winner on his head will help inspire Taku to emulate his predecessor's hard-won success.
Hats - or helmets - off to Lotus designer Jason Fowler who put in 45 hours of hard graft creating the one-off piece, proving that there's a whole lot more to helmet design that meets the eye.
