German Gp Preview - Nürburgring Set-Up Guide

Set-up Guide:

Engine

There are no engine requirements which are specific to the Nürburgring, so we are looking for good mid-range torque, for exiting the medium speed corners and good all round driveability.

Brakes

There is a need for good brakes, which can be modulated well to attack the chicane before the last corner.

Suspension

There will be a focus on a set-up for high speed change of direction corners – the Nürburgring is somewhere where the car is set up a little stiffer than the general baseline. Additionally, there is not much use of the kerbs so this does not need to be factored into the equation.

Rear Wing

A downforce level very similar to that used in Silverstone, which is on the high side in comparison with the other circuits this season.

Tyres

The medium and soft Pirelli P-Zeros have been allocated, which is the same combination as seen at the European GP. Data suggests that they will be slightly better suited to the Nürburgring as it's more severe on tyres than Valencia.

Front Wing

For the Nürburgring you need a car which carries a reasonable amount of front wing to balance the car for the longish medium-speed corners.

Track annotations:

  • Good midrange pick-up required from the engine exiting turns 10 and 11, both of which are taken between 160-170 kph
  • A high speed section of the circuit with turns 8 and 9 taken at over 250kph
  • Strong braking with good modulation required into the hairpin which is a good overtaking opportunity. The hairpin is approached at 280kph with the slowest speed around it of 100kph
  • Good high speed turn in balance required here as turn 5 is approached at around 270kph and taken at just over 200 kph before braking to about 130 kph for turn 6.
  • There's a quite technical low speed complex T1 – T4, mechanical grip and suspension settings have greater importance here than other sections of the circuit where downforce and the aero package have greater influence
  • Braking here from around 300kph to under 80kph
  • Turn 15 is vital to get a good speed on the following straight. You need to shed 100kph coming into the corner, and ensure a clean exit onto the power.

  • What is the point of a Lotus these days?

I have recently changed my Daily from a dirty diesel to an electric.  It struck me that the 0-60 times were almost identical, possibly quicker, to the Exige so my thought was, if comfortable family cars with suitcase room are now performing so well, are our cars becoming obsolete? Has the acceleration potential of EV’s made traditional sports cars meaningless? In an era where electric motor torque is rewriting the rules of straight‑line acceleration, it’s easy to forget what “fast” use

LOTUS Action Camera Mod for rear view mirror

Hi, my name is Marco and I'm from Liverpool, I'm new to this forum and new to Lotus. Towards the end of last year I started to get that itch of wanting a sporty fun car again (I had owned a couple of Mk4 Supras between 2000 & 2009) I was looking for a car that was not too big as it needed to fit into my narrow garage so I could hook it up to a trickle charger as it was not going to be a daily driver. I decided that an Elise would be perfect, after searching for months for the

Toxic Green S-Cup - (Aka Grogu)

Hi all as with most of my cars I thought I’d start a bit of a build thread. However unlike most cars which I bought and built up to be highly modified the plans for the lotus are quite different and so this will be more thread of its life in my ownership. I have also created a Facebook page called “Toxic Green S-Cup - (Aka Grogu)” containing images of its progress pre and post purchase. Newbie question

As the title suggests , a newbie query. I have just bought an S2 Elise , 2007 with the Toyota 1ZZ power unit in ‘ touring spec’. That means electric windows, a radio and , err, not sure what else. Anyway, that is not the subject of the query. The car is blue with a cream interior. The latter I don’t plan to keep. In fact , already bought some equivalent second hand door cards in black and am looking hard at a pair of Corbeau LE seats . So, first part of my query centres on those Corbeau seats. A
