Lotus Sport Exige turns in a fine performance in the G2 Category
of the Zhuhai round of the FIA GT Championships
Following an impressive victory at the 12-hour Merdeka Millenium Endurance Race at Sepang,
Malaysia in August 2005, the Amprex Motorsports Lotus Sport Exige, developed by a small
team in Lotus Sport at Hethel, received a special invitation to race at Round 9 of the highly
competitive FIA GT championship at the Formula One-standard Zhuhai International Circuit in
southern China.
Merdeka-winner Tengku Djan, and Paul Stockwell, five times Australian champion, led the G2
Category until 3 laps from the end of the three hour race when Tengku Djan Ley pulled into the
pits suffering from severe dehydration and exhaustion caused by soaring temperatures.
The team finished one place behind the eventual class winner, the Belgian pair comprising of
Le Mans driver Vanina Ickx and Bas Leinders in a Vertigo Streiff race car.
Amprex Motorsport Team owner Genji Hashimoto said afterwards: "We had a fuel leak
problem during the whole race. We planned to do only one pit stop, but in fact we had to stop
four times! Anyway we learnt a lot in the FIA GT Championship, it was a good experience for
us, we are happy with this weekend."
