The gasoline engine of the future will depend upon many new and emerging technologies in
order to drive down fuel consumption (in the form of CO2 emission) while maintaining or
improving emissions of regulated primary pollutants. Some of these technologies (e.g.
gasoline direct injection) have been available for some time and have moved into a second
generation [1,2,3]; others (e.g. fully variable valve trains) have only been available as
research systems or have been announced with no firm future marketplace introduction
[4,5,6]. However, because of the possible synergies between concepts, these systems have
an imperative behind them to develop fully and become commonplace.
