● Silverstone seems to always be either hotter than a hairdryer or wetter than the Ganges, and no one ever packs appropriately. The severe downpour of 1975 is particularly memorable, when drivers were sent skittering off the track everywhere you looked. Former Lotus champion Emerson Fittipaldi emerged from the chaos to take the spoils.

● Nineteen-Sixty-Eight was the last time a non-works driver won the British Grand Prix. Swiss racer Jo Siffert won in his Rob Walker-prepared Lotus-Cosworth 49B, after works Lotus drivers Jackie Oliver and Graham Hill retired from the lead.

● Rubens Barrichello's win in 2003 was memorable because a nutter in a kilt invaded the track that day. What's not widely known is that Rubens had another dangerous brush with the public the following morning, when someone ran into him with a luggage trolley at Heathrow Airport, smashing the Brazilian's trophy.

● In 1973, Jody Scheckter triggered what was then F1's biggest-ever pile-up when he spun in front of the pack at 160mph, at the end of the first lap. He destroyed nine machines.

● When Michael Schumacher broke his legs at Silverstone in 1999, he was airlifted to Northampton General. But despite the VIP arrival, there wasn't a private room ready. So, the story goes, Schumi was kept in a broom cupboard until a proper bed was available. Should've gone private.
