Just thinking, you could mount fans that extract air from the engine bay just under the boot vent perhaps?

Yeah its an idea. I was also thinking of beefing up the ducts in the undertray to suck it in better.

This looks great ! Can't wait too see how well the conversion turns out.. I would love something similar for mine (can't realistically afford a Honda /Audi conversion)

Top effort that man ... keep the pic's coming :)

OK I've made a small amount of progress over the past couple of days. I've started to strip the engine down to see what I've wasted 150 english pounds on

Started by stripping off this giant pump on the side of it. Not sure if it was something to do with power steering or air con or something but its going in the bin! Looking at it I think the water pump is too big so I may need to use an electric one to save space and of course weight! Stripped out the exhaust manifold and had a look at the turbo. The pics dont tell you much but theres not much play in the shaft and it looks in pretty good nick to be honest!

Also got around to taking the head off. Inside the cam covers looks ok, valves look good, the head gasket has gone in the corner (aparently a common problem resolved by fitting a 'klinger gasket' (hmm sound like a k series doesnt it!)). Nothing nasty staring back at me:

Pistons also look OK and the wear on the block isnt too bad.

Oh yeah I also bought this last year:

Its a megasquirt DIY ECU thingy. I was planning on trying to put bike throttle bodies on the K until i came up with my latest idea. I'll probably tackle this bit last as it looks complex!! Should still run on the T but the only thing is you have to build it yourself. Scary.

Bought some mahle pistons off ebay on the weekend as they can handle a little more boost than the type I will have and a dump valve (yes a dump valve - no comments thanks!!)

So far the spend is up to £228 on parts. I've had to blow a fat load of my budget on an engine hoist to as there's no way I'm strong enough to manouvre the engine around. I'm sure it will come in useful anyway but it was £120 ouch. That puts me up to £340 so far.

thats it so far. Actually thats probably it until this hoist comes as I cant get the engine on the stand until it does!

Ref Engine Hoist, you can always re-sell it again to re coup some of the expense - just an idea.

As for the idea to tun the Bike Throttle Boddies on the K Series, how far did you look into this? As i am aware its a common thing to do on Westfields running the Zetec and has some good results.

Didn't look far to be honest. The thing I found was that some people were saying no way its not possible and others were saying oh yeah a mate of mine has done this! so for what it reckoned it would cost it seemed worth the risk but then I sort of worked out that to get the best from the engine you would need cams and verniers etc so I thought I could probably graft the T in for less (famous last words)

Blimey! Do you have to solder all the componants onto that ECU as well Phil?

Is it programmable as well when it's finished?

Yes you build it yourself and its fully programmble for fueling and ignition timing. From what I can gather you have to ad your own timing wheel to the crank as the K series uses a strange wheel pattern. Cheap though - the board was £45 and I reckon the electronic bits will be about £60. Plus the risk of melting your engine - priceless!!

Quick update:

Took this off tonight. It turns out to be the water pump and power steering pump which unfortunately are combined. This means I will have to purchase an electric water pump (if anyone can tell me the name of some companies who make/sell these I would be greatful). There is a really good weight saving again here however another expensive item that I'll have to buy:

Also managed to bring in a bit of manpower and got the engine on the stand:

thats it for today though as theres some of this in the fridge and I'm afraid it takes priority:

Erm, so have you honestly never rebuilt an engine Phil?

Err not exactly. Done a few top ends but never a bottom end rebuild. I've taken a fair few apart though. To be honest the botom end seems fairly simple so far. (famous last words)

Good on you I say. Never really done much with cars, so I had a crack at my HIDs the other day, glad I did. Bloke at local Lotus specialist was like, "How much did you pay for them", "oh we could have done them fitted for £X" - Yeah, but I wanted to fit them myself and learn as I go, plan on keeping Loti' for years to come.
