It is heavy soil. I dig a trench a spade deep and pile the soil on the side. I then throw out all the large stones. Push the soil back in and plant in the middle of the trench. It seems to work. More by luck than judgement i expect. I also use lots of chicken poo as fertilizer in the autumn.
