mr_lee Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 I was on my way home last night and was sitting at a set of traffic lights on a dual carriageway when an audi TT came flying up the side of me in the outside lane. Although the windows were tinted you could see he was trying to goad me when the lights turned green. The first set of lights i just tootled off but he stayed by the side of me at the same speed so at the next set of lights i thought i would teach him a lesson. After annihilating him pretty easily from the go id proved my point and slowed down again but he pulled up the side of me and asked me to wind down my window. He was quick to tell me that his TT was 270 bhp and asked me how powerful mine was. Im sure he was expecting the same sort of power output so when i told him it was 153 bhp he seemed a little embarrassed and proceeded to tell me how i only beat him because mine was lighter. Yup i thought! The cheesy grin that was across my face didnt seem to help either as he looked the other way at the next set of lights. JOB DONE! Back to driving like a granddad now.
MilnerR Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 There are lots of things I can beat away from the lights in my Exige with only 190bhp, my problems arise when I'm in 3rd gear in lane 2 of a dual carriage way and the 1.9TDI passat in front of me leaves me for dead whilst I wait patiently for the 2nd cam to kick in! Try following the 270bhp TT whilst it overtakes something at 40-70mph ) My last "family" car was a 2.5 impreza STi (with prodrive pack - 316 bhp) which would struggle to shake my S2 elise on the right road. However, give the impreza a bit of room and my poor elise wouldn't know which way it went. Having said that, out of all the cars I've owned and driven (including some very neck-snapping bits of kit) the Exige/Elise with their little 4 cylinder engines and perfect setups are the certainly the most fun.
JonS Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Nice one Lee I've done this on the continent with my mate who has a 198bhp Z4, against me with my 120bhp S2! I shoot off to 60 using 1st/2nd, and then by 80 he's peg me back and it is neck and neck from there. Incidentally, his stats state he can only get to 59mph in 2nd so has to use 3rd to reach 60! Gotta love the Lotus!

That is the great benefit of the SC cars, it really evens out the torque so it is more useable more of the time. Love stories like this though, you can embarass some really exotic kit in our little 1.8's
MilnerR Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 I'm assidiously saving up for a SC kit for the exige due to this very issue. The other thing I like about owning a Lotus is that people in much more expensive sportscars will stare at the Lotus. I was waiting at a junction this morning and an Audi R8 came past; the driver nearly crashed into a parked car rubber-necking at my exige.....
Laura Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 was waiting at a junction this morning and an Audi R8 came past; the driver nearly crashed into a parked car rubber-necking at my exige..... when I had my Elise I almost did this but I was the one doing the rubber-necking at the R8 when they first came out
MilnerR Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Thanks for the welcome, I've been a PH member for years and years. I bought an Elise in 2008 and then sold that for an Exige earlier this summer. Only just got round to joining a Lotus forum I used to get excited by R8s but I drive through Prestbury to get to work, so every other car is either a range rover sport, Boxster, 911 C2 or an R8 ;o) It's only a Audi after all.........
