Fiona
Very keen on getting an Elan. Don't have the cash, and have a wish list of about 10 cars but saw this on the 'bay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...4528581572&rd=1 Would rather have a Sprint but that is a fine looking machine. Simon V
Fiona Fine taste! If you're seriously looking for a +2 I would recommend the 130/5 later variant - 130bhp, 5 speed. My first ever Lotus... TGO 316M

SimonC
thats rather tasty, was looking on ebay myself yesterday for a 4 seater.... Anyone know how much they r to run? simiar to an Elise? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have had an 72 Elan Sprint for over 10 years and when it's not salty try and use it every week. It has been like painting the forth bridge as it's a rolling restoration project. It wasn't bad at all but after 30 years almost everything needs replacing no matter what it might look like from the outside. I have considered a restored +2 as an every day motor (Spyder Chassis and Zetec motor) but can not imagine running an original unless I had a limitless budget and another spare car to use WHEN it breaks. The Loads Of Trouble Usually Serious is a bit unfair as most problems are most certainly maintenance related. Cars of that age have shrinking rubbers, the water gets in, corrodes connections et al. The electrical components have to be earthed correctly as it's a plastic body and the chassis (if not already replaced) has a tendancy to trap water in certain areas and corrode. I think it is fair to say the older cars are much more delacate, need and deserve mucho respect. If you work out what it costs to buy and maintain a new motor and you spent the same on a restored Elan you could keep it going but it will need to visit a specialist lots so budget for another runabout if you rely on your car to live! go on do it - lifes not about the destination it's about the journey (sometimes truncated if you use a lotus)
