Running Hot!

Hi, I do hope someone can help? I have recently fitted the Lotus sport triple by pas rad, laminova oil cooler and accusump kit to my car.My problem is that my car is is still running hot on track. :) ( 2005 Elise 111r ) when road driving all seems fine temps range from 86-92 or up to 99 if stood in traffic, this I believe to be normal. I recently did a track day at Donington with other Lotus cars in the same session. My car was getting hotter & hotter each lap until it reached about 105 c it then fluctuated between 103 & 106 c.After talking to other owners running Toyota engines, they all say their cars run mid 90's so it seems there is a problem with mine, the symptoms are the same as before I carried out the upgrades. My engine was also much hotter to touch after a session than the other cars ( this I think would rule out the temp sensor giving a false reading ). Help needed please. My thought process would indicate the next thing to try would be to swap the thermostat, has anyone encountered stat problems with their car? Any other thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance RUSS.

I haven't had that problem but I did have a problem with my thermostat on my 111r with only 8,000miles on the clock.

It would open under high rpm and dump all the cold coolant from the rest of the system, similar problems was found with the supercharged elise thermostats. I had the thermostat changed (which isn't an easy job because of where it is located, according to the technician at Gray Paul) and now it will only drop 1-2c maximum under high rpm.

Oh, and have you made sure your fans are kicking in at 99c half speed and 103 at full speed? I had my rad fan motor seize up a while back.

If your fans are kicking in and its cooling the water temp down when idling, surely it can't be that the thermostat is closing at high rpm, cus I had the opposite of it being pushed open under high rpm. So unless it's sticking shut all the time and the fans are not cooling the engine down at idle I doubt it is the thermostat.

Thanks Phil,

I was thinking that the stat was possibly not opening far enough so the coolant flow was coping at low rpm but not alowing enough coolant through when the engine is generating more heat, seemed the stat would be the logical thing to try. The fans are kicking in fine so no related problems there. I have had alook at the stat position and it would be a pain to get to as it is housed in the block above the oil filter no room work without first removing the oil filter and sandwich plate.

I think one thing you could try before trying the thermostat is bleeding the coolant system. On lotustalk.com I remember reading about someone having higher than usual temperatures that stopped after they had re-bled the coolant system.
