Metro Alloy Throttle Body In Place Of Plastic Elise One!?

Afternoon Elise'ers!

Been looking on Ebay for K-series bits and noticed a fair few throttle bodies about, some right up to 56mm! I only have a standard 118 BHP engine at the mo, but of course would like more. Sometimes when booting it from stand still my revs stick at about 3K or more, which looks right wank when trying to find second :S It's not sticking throttle linkage and externally the existing plastic throttle body seems to spring back fine (perhaps it's a kind of float inside sticking or something?) anyhow, I'm guessing the fault to be with the throttle body and know from my years on the Performance Metro Club that the plastic throttle body is always frowned upon in favour of the alloy version. So on looking at my 1.4 MPi GTi K-series as I thought, that does have an alloy throttle body. Is it worth my while, and will I get any gains in swapping them over? At a quick glance it looks doable with a small bit of work.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks Chaps :badmood:

Hi Dave.

I found a problem with my 2001 S2 standard k-series, when it was Dyno'd back in March. I was loosing all power at 4,500 and using far too much fuel. I spoke to a couple of people and I've decided to get a 52mm TB. This is happening next week. Last week I cleaned out my filthy hurricane, and noticed such a dramatic difference immediately. I'm hoping the TB will help resolve the over fueling issue, but we'll see I guess.

Very popular mod Dave, because as you have found, the plastic TBs do tend to stick.

Much debate as to whether a 56mm will give you any more power, in my experience, not.

I've finally opted for a standard size alloy one - think mine came off an MG or something?

While it doesn't seem any more powerful, it certainly feels more responsive when I "blip" the throttle.

Another PMC cross over!!

Well the 56mm from the MPi GTi will fit, there are a few things extra on the TB like the idle air valve and some incorrect pipe sizes you'll have to deal with. Oh and it's a bit longer so mating to the standard airbox is more "DIY" than fitting the 52mm alloy or the 48mm alloy. On it's own, you'll see no more power, but if you have cams and perhaps other mods, it will allow more airflow thus perhaps more power. Never proved that thought.

Would be interesting to know who you are from PMC.... I'm sure you might recognise my username????

Cheers for the thought.Yeh, summit's sticking slightly. Like I say, must be internal as everything on the face of it is returning as it should. When you say you opted for the standard size, that'd be the 48mm yeh? so the one you've gone for is the same as the Metro's alloy body I have to hand? Sounds like you've had good results if the off the mark response has improved. I shall try it then I think, if nothing else it will hopefully cure the "look at me-ness" I'm getting when leaving a petrol station at 2.5K revs!

Yeah Mike :) Did click you were about before I posted this thread, I left you a MSG on the one I clocked you on, but unlike Delphi this forum doesn't seem to alert you of unread replies to your account, so check it out Here :) How... and where is A18 ROV nowadays LOL.As for this thread, the alloy TB on my MPi GTi is a standard one, so I'd guess 48mm. I plan to chuck a set of 135 cams in as n when I can lay my hands on a set so as and when I do, will probably be worth upgrading to the 52mm TB but for now, you'd suggest it is worth putting the 48mm alloy one the Elise just to make things smoother if nothing else?

Update:

Owwh.. now I see what you're all goin on about! On removing my MPi GTi T/body I find as an OEM part it is 56mm. I could of course go back and edit my previous posts to make it look like I knew this.. but I'll just be honest and look sheepish! ;)

I had assumed it would be a 48mm alloy equivalent of the plastic one.. obviously not! So that's kinda pis*ed on my bonfire a bit as reading HERE it would appear Dave Andrews' results when playing around with over sized throttle bodies weren't all good and it would seem that without a programmable ECU and a RR by fitting this 56mm TB to my standard Elise I could be making it less powerful and that aint quite the idea :)

Would the better bet be to leave my standard plastic TB on as it is until I get some Sport 135 cams, or will fitting the 56mm alloy one be beneficial in other ways to make the possible lack of power on full throttle warrant itself? Confused.com now! :badmood:

More Updates:

Been looking into this all day and think I'm convinced this is not worth while. In conjuction with the above bit about Dave Andrews findings that were helpfully brought to my attention, this page HERE gives it the thumbs down too! So I shall stick my now rather shiney 56mm alloy TB back on the Metro :)
